Ann Adeline Seyle

Ann Wessels Seyle, 79, passed away peacefully at home on December 24, 2025, eleven days after the loss of her beloved husband of fifty-six years, Charles Eugene Seyle. She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth (Andrew) Fenton and Adeline (Mark) Glidewell, and her son, Charles Eugene Seyle, Jr. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Mark Harris Glidewell, Jr., Caroline Rose Fenton, Charles Morris Glidewell and Alexander John Fenton, and several nieces and nephews.

A native of Savannah, Ann Adeline was the fourth and youngest child of Fred and Rosalie Wessels. She grew up in the Parkside neighborhood and attended several local schools (including one year of kindergarten at Romana Riley with her future husband Chuck). A 1964 graduate of Savannah Country Day School, she attended Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. In December 1965, she made her debut at the Christmas Cotillion, one of the last major events held at the old Desoto Hotel before it was torn down.

Ann was home for the summer in 1967. Chuck had also moved back home after graduating from the University of Georgia. Although Ann and Chuck shared mutual friends, they did not know each other well when they happened to run into each other at Tybee over that summer. Their courtship became long-distance when Chuck attended Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. Their engagement was even more long-distance after Chuck was stationed in the Mediterranean on the USS Galveston. Ann traveled to France, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain to sightsee with Chuck while he was on shore leave.

They married on December 6, 1969, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, and moved to California where Chuck was stationed at Naval Base San Diego. Chuck and Ann returned to Savannah in 1970. Ann completed her studies at Armstrong State College and, before becoming a mother, taught at Independent Presbyterian School (now St. Andrew's School).

In 1977, the Seyles moved to Dutch Island, which Ann's father, Fred, had begun to develop in the early 1970s. When Fred died suddenly in August 1981, the Georgia Gazette wrote that "the enterprise that gave him the most personal joy was his Dutch Island development" and that he "wanted to make it special." Ann carried out that legacy, serving for decades as Dutch Island's unofficial ambassador. While Chuck was the one who guided families in purchasing a house, Ann was the one who guided families to the resources and information they needed to make it their home. She entertained the children while Chuck showed houses, hosted parties, organized carpools, and quietly took on many tasks that eased the lives of her family, friends, and neighbors.

Ann's greatest joy was in caring for others, especially her husband, children, grandchildren, and pets. She was a kind, generous and loyal friend. Although many of her friendships dated from her childhood, she treasured every one of her friends, whether she had known them for a few years or for decades. She loved to spend time on the water, whether she was going crabbing, swimming, or waterskiing. She enjoyed reading (especially to her children and grandchildren), entertaining, and hearing from friends near and far about the details of their lives.

Ann was a member of the Savannah Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and also of the National Society

Magna Charta Dames. She was a former member of the Junior League of Savannah. She served for many years as the alumni representative for the Savannah Country Day School Class of 1964 and contributed to the life of the school in countless ways while her three children and two grandchildren were students there.

A memorial service for Ann will be held Saturday, January 17, 2026, at 10:00 AM at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 10 West 31st Street. Reverend Ben Martin will officiate. The family invites friends to a celebration of the lives of Ann and Chuck following the service at the Savannah Golf Club, 1661 E. President Street.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Savannah Country Day School, St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, or Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church.
