Anna Sue Allen Garten, age 88, of Daleville, VA, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2025, following a brief illness.
Born on December 17, 1936, in Sandstone, Summers County, WV, she was the second child and only daughter of Ashby E. (Tom) and Glenna Hutchison Allen. A proud West Virginian at heart, Sue lived a life rooted in faith, family, service, and love.
Sue was a woman of quiet strength and generous spirit, deeply devoted to her family, friends, and community. She was a long-time active member and prayer warrior at Daleville Baptist Church, where she was involved in the Thankful Thursday and Young at Heart groups. She also joyfully served on the kitchen committee and in Vacation Bible School, faithfully using her time and talents to bless others.
After graduating high school, Sue began her career with the telephone company in Hinton, WV. She later transferred to C&P Telephone Co. in Roanoke, VA, and eventually to Bell South in Montgomery, AL.
She was a creative soul who found joy in quilting, crocheting, ceramics, knitting, sewing, and gardening. She loved history, reading, jigsaw puzzles, word searches, West Virginia Mountaineer sports, popcorn, mexican food, watching Wheel of Fortune, and a good hot fudge sundae from Dairy Queen.
Sue met the love of her life, Dennis "Denny" L. Garten, in high school, and they married several years later. Together, they built a beautiful life that took them to Alabama, Germany, and Texas during Denny's service in the U.S. Air Force. They shared a love for traveling and cheering on WVU sports but also the simple pleasures of drinking coffee and reading the newspaper together each morning.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years, Dennis L. Garten; her son, Harry R. (Alan) Peyton; her brother, Thomas G. Allen; and son-in-law, Michael H. Jenks.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: daughter, Karen Sue Jenks of Roanoke, VA; sons, Bob Garten of Hutto, TX, and David A. (Delia) Garten of Odessa, TX; and daughter-in-law, Edie Peyton of Blue Ridge, VA.
She is also survived by her brothers, Robert L. (Barbara) Allen of Roanoke, VA, and Richard C. (Janis) Allen of Mt. Hope, WV; and her sister-in-law, Linda L. Allen of Daleville.
Sue was a proud and loving granny/grandma to Christopher (Carolyn) Jenks of Tyler, TX; Ashley (Kevin) Poindexter of Lynchburg, VA; Brian (Amber) Jenks of Blue Ridge, VA; Crystal (Daniel) McBroom of Roanoke, VA; Emily Austin of Richmond, VA; Stephanie Garten of Wichita Falls, TX; Tiffaney Hunt of Odessa, TX; and David Garten, Jr. (Amanda) of Amarillo, TX.
Her great-grandchildren brought her endless joy: Natalie, Isaac, Hannah, Jett, Sophia, Kate, Tabitha, and Titus Jenks, all of Tyler, TX; Brayden and Keeley Poindexter, both of Lynchburg, VA; Annabella Wheeler, Adalynn Jenks and Layla McGavock, all of Roanoke, VA; Walker and Rowan McBroom, both of Roanoke, VA; Mark York, Jr., Odessa, TX; and David Garten III "Trayce" and Amina Garten of Amarillo, TX.
The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to Heartland Hospice and Brightstar Services for their compassionate care during Sue's illness.
They are also deeply grateful to the friends and neighbors who have shown kindness, support, and love throughout the years.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 20, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Radar Funeral Home, Daleville, VA. A funeral service will be conducted on Monday, July 21, at 11:00 a.m., also at Radar Funeral Home, with a graveside service to follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
Sue's legacy of faith, love, and service lives on through the many lives she touched. She will be remembered always, and dearly missed.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Daleville Baptist Church.
