Anna "Ann" (Gonsalves) Barros, 92, of New Bedford died October 9, 2025 at Hathaway Manor Extended Care Facility.
She was the wife of the late Hector J. Barros, Sr.
Born in Taunton, the daughter of the late James and Antonia (Monteiro) Gonsalves, she lived in New Bedford most of her life.
She worked as a seamstress in factories for companies such as Kay Windsor and Calvin Klein Jeans, having retired from the latter after more than 30 years. In her retirement, she worked for the Standard Times assembling daily newspapers, a job she thoroughly enjoyed.
She was a member of the Taunton Cape Verdean Women's Club and a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church in New Bedford.
Mrs. Barros enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her siblings and her beloved grandchildren. She loved music, dancing, cooking, bowling, word puzzles, watching her "stories", and New England sports teams. Over the past five decades, she loved opening her home to family and friends near and far every summer for New Bedford's annual Cape Verdean Recognition Parade. Everyone was welcome to stop by to make a plate of her best Cape Verdean dishes and dance in her yard to the Cape Verdean music playing from the bandstand at the Cape Verdean American Veterans Memorial Hall across the street.
Mrs. Barros delighted in listening to her husband play the saxophone. She enjoyed her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren's athletic and musical pursuits, always on the sideline for every game and in the audience for every performance. She loved taking drives to Taunton and Newport, RI to visit her sisters and brothers.
Survivors include her son, Hector J. Barros, Jr. of New Bedford; a sister, Antonia "Toni" Monteiro of Newport, RI; 7 grandchildren, Wayne Burgo II and his wife Cheri of Haymarket, VA, Jerrel Burgo and his wife Danielle of Millville, Marcel Burgo, Shane Burgo, Kylie Johnson, Jaydn Barros and Teijh Barros, all of New Bedford; 6 great-grandchildren, Aayla Burgo, Casen Burgo, Easton Burgo, Brighton Burgo, Quincy Burgo, and Azy'as Barros; and many nieces and nephews.
She was the mother of the late Doreen (Barros) Burgo and Donna Barros, and the sister of the late Amelia Sanders, Mary Lou Antone, Isabella Monteiro, Dolores Barboza, Jo-Ann Lopes, Hilda Avellar, James Gonsalves, Alfred Gonsalves, Samuel Gonsalves, and Robert Gonsalves.
The family extends a special thank you to the staff at Hathaway Manor for the care they provided Mrs. Barros, and to Susan Costa, a dear friend who cared deeply for Mrs. Barros in her final years, often bringing her food, gifts, painting her nails, and keeping her company.
Her Funeral will be held on Tuesday, October 14th at 9 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by her Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 10 AM. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Monday, October 13th from 4-7 PM.
