Steven P. Burgo

Steven P. Burgo, 66, of New Bedford passed away Sunday October 5, 2025 at home after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Shelley M. Mendes.

Born in New Bedford, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.

Steven was formerly employed as a cook in the cafeteria of New Bedford High School where he was affectionately known as the "Fry Guy." He later worked at various local restaurants until his retirement.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and his group of friends at Bedford Towers.

The family would like to thank Kevin and Amanda from STAT Ambulance and the staff of the Gifford Street Treatment Center for the many kindnesses shown to Steven.

He is survived by his daughters, Diana Mendes and her husband Michael Silva, and Denise Mendes; six grandchildren, Khaelyn Mendes, Tayah Mendes, Dasanee Mendonca, Lyrik Mendonca, Bentley Senna, and Kyle Mendes; his great-granddaughter, Neriah Mendes; his brothers, Kenneth Burgo, Kevin Burgo, and Dale Burgo and his wife Lorena; his niece who was like a daughter, Kellie Mendes; and many nieces, nephews, Godchildren, and cousins.

He was predeceased by his mother, Yvonne (Turner) Burgo, and his brothers, Gordon "Skip" Burgo, Jr. and Dana Burgo.

His memorial service will be held on Tuesday October 21st at 12 Noon at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Visitation will be on Tuesday morning from 10AM-12 Noon prior to the service. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery.
