Anna Owens Sumerlin, 79, of Wake Forest, passed away on Wednesday, July 16, 2025 after a few years of declining health. She was born in Wilson County, NC to the late Edgar Bruce "Jim" and Nancy Webb Owens on June 3rd, 1946. Anna was preceded in death by her sister, Nina Ruth Davenport, and her beloved husband of 53 years, Robert Ray Sumerlin.
Anna's professional career spanned 58 years in the financial services field, having begun her career at First Citizens Bank, and then with Fidelity Bank before joining Wake Forest Federal Savings and Loan Association in 1979. She was appointed Managing Officer and later President of the Bank before being elected as its Chairman of the Board. Anna was one of the first female bank Presidents in North Carolina and served as a role model and mentor for those that followed. In many respects, she was a pioneer in her banking career, leading Wake Forest Federal to become one of the most highly rated banks in the state.
Anna was active in various charitable, professional and community service organizations. She previously served as Chair and Director of the Wake Forest Chamber of Commerce, and as a Director of the Trentini Foundation and the Koinonia Foundation. She also was active and served in various roles within the NC Bankers Association. Anna received the Russell Dew award for outstanding service to the community in 1997 from the Koinonia Foundation.
Anna was much beloved by her family and co-workers. She had a keen mind and quick wit. She was also fiercely independent and determined in the face of obstacles. There was no stopping Anna once she took on a challenge. Always willing to help, she made countless lifelong friends. She had a twinkle in her eye and a sweet smile that made her easily approachable. Anna was fun loving and always up for the next adventure, whether in her travels with family and friends or in service to her community. If there was a casino nearby, all the better. She was an avid collector of glassware and antiques, with several storage units filled to the brim to demonstrate her seriousness. With Robert, who she adored, she spent much of her free time at their place at the beach in Carteret County. It was here where she could relax and unwind away from her professional responsibilities while also enjoying the company of great neighbors and friends.
Anna was affectionately known as "Aunt Granny" by Bryan and wife, Margo Webb, and Brianna Webb, whom she lovingly regarded as her own. As her health declined in the past few years, Anna increasingly relied upon the loving care and support of Bryan and Margo. It was at their home in Rocky Mount, NC where Anna peacefully passed.
Leaving behind to cherish the legacy of their "Granny," and the apples of Anna's eye, Nataleah and Camden Webb, and Brinley Cox. Anna is survived by her Aunt, Faye Leach (Denny) of Brainerd, MN, a special cousin, Ann Uhlman (Mike) of Lake Gaston, NC, a host of beloved cousins from across the country, and a special colleague, Bob White, of
Wake Forest, NC.
Anna will be remembered for her astute business sense and caring and loving disposition. She was a trail blazer for women in banking and a mentor to so many of her colleagues. She was generous with her time and giving with her guidance. She impacted so many lives in ways that will not be forgotten.
At Anna's request, a graveside funeral service will be held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon, July 21, 2025 at the Macclesfield Town Cemetery, 534 State Rd 1109, Macclesfield, NC 27852.
