Anne Campbell Carlton Gorton passed away peacefully on March 18, 2024, at the age of 83
with her son and daughter by her side. Born on October 11, 1940, to Caleb Sidney and Corrie
Anne Carlton, Anne was raised in Sumner, Mississippi.
After graduating high school in 1958 from West Tallahatchee High School, Anne attended Ole
Miss, where she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
While visiting her grandmother in Belzoni, Mississippi, Anne met Don Gorton, and they were
married August 1, 1959. Together they owned Gorton's Pharmacy and Anne's Gift and Hobby
shop.
After closing the gift shop, Anne went back to school to get her teaching degree and taught
elementary education for 21 years. She was a very devoted and respected teacher and was
even chosen as teacher of the year while at Madison Station Elementary.
Retiring at age 55, Anne did not slow down but spent her time cooking for fellow Belzonians,
entertaining for friends, and traveling all around the world. Known lovingly by her grandchildren
as Mammy, Anne loved spending time with each one of them and would plan a special trip to
take with each grandchild.
One of her greatest blessings in her last year was to witness the birth of her first great
grandchild, Caleb. She loved showing off pictures of him to everyone she would see.
Throughout her life and up until last year, Anne filled her church with worship music each
Sunday through her gifts and talents on the organ and the piano.
Anne is survived by her son Jimmy Gorton of New York City and her daughter, Lindsay Warren
(Ty) of Little Rock, Arkansas. She is also survived by two sisters, Carolyn Gorton (Mack) of
Belzoni, and Sidney Lyon ( Doug) of Nashville, Tennessee. She leaves behind seven
grandchildren, one great grandchild, one niece, two nephews, and many great nieces and
nephews.
Anne is preceded in death by her parents, Sidney and Corrie Anne Carlton; her husband, Don
Gorton, Jr.; and her son Don Gorton lll.
Visitation will be 12:00 PM, Friday, March 29, 2024 at the First Baptist Church of Belzoni.
A memorial service will be at 1:00 PM. Graveside services will immediately follow at Belzoni Cemetery.

Ms. Gorton was my 2nd grade teacher at Madison Station in the early 90´s. She took me in as if I was her own child, making me feel so special & loved. She would even take me with her after school and on weekends to spend time with me. She lived down the street from my great-grandparents at the time. She taught me how to make homemade butter and peanut butter. I still remember her eating popcorn & drinking diet cokes. I really believed she was my best friend! She sure made all us kiddos feel that way. I remember when her daughter Lindsay had her first baby shower & I was so excited about meeting the baby. Ms. Gorton was thrilled to become a grandmother & she would talk about it all the time! She was the most special teacher in my entire life & truly changed my life for the better. Thank you to her family for sharing her with us. How lucky were we. Sending gratitude & condolences to all of you.
