Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jones Funeral Home - Winchester on Nov. 18, 2025.
Dr. Anne Marie Evans, age 74, was born in Roanoke, VA; the first of three daughters born to John and Becky Locke. She died August 3, 2025 in
Winchester, VA. She is survived by her husband Michael Evans; sisters, Nancy (Rock) Curlee and Becca (Jeff) Leonard; multiple friends and relatives.
She graduated high school in 1969 from the all-white Patrick Henry High School. Three years later she graduated from Mary Baldwin Women's College in Staunton, VA. Then she was off to the University of Georgia for the next four years, earning an Ed. D. (Doctor of Education) by the age of 25.
Race relations and her privileges versus so many children who grew up in poverty shaped her entire adult life in conscious as well as subconscious ways.
Her first job after graduate school was as a school psychologist for Henrico County Schools, at the time, the poorest and blackest county in VA. She had stories to tell.
Next Anne Marie came to Winchester and eventually founded the Family Life Counseling Center on South Loudoun. Her practice served many Medicaid insured children as well as students at Grafton School, with a sliding fee scale less than that of Northwestern Community Mental Health. She was forced to close the Family Life Center in 1993.
Anne Marie then took her expertise to Raleigh, NC from which she held multiple state and local positions. Her favorite was ten years as school psychologist at the one school in the massive Wake County school system where junior and senior high school students were sent after being removed as problem students in their base schools. She helped many of these students receive the basic educational skills they otherwise would not have received.
Anne Marie loved to travel but her favorite place on earth was Kill Devil Hills, NC where she was blessed to have a home for more than twenty years. She traveled to Israel four different times.
She was raised to be a confident, and independent woman who could speak her mind; and she did. In her retirement she loved Viking River Cruises in Europe. One year she took a solo trip to Israel where she took herself around in a rented car. (By the way, the GPS was in Hebrew which she could not read.) Her last trip was a solo trip to Spain, before which her oncologist was forced to give her a blood transfusion, never the less she had a great trip.
Anne Marie knew herself to be economically and educationally privileged. Her whole adult life was based on giving back to those who did not share her privilege. It was a blessing to many people to know her and to be influenced by her. She will be remembered as a good friend and mentor to many.
A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, August 9, 2025 at 11:00 am at the Chapel of the Village at Orchard Ridge, 400 Clocktower Ridge Drive, Winchester.
