Ditty passed away at Parkwest Hospital Knoxville, TN after losing a long battle with heart problems and cancer. She graduated from Webb High School of Knoxville, and from the University of Tennessee with a major in English and a minor in Anthropology. Her first job was as a receptionist and tour guide at the McClung Museum. She married Merritt Jenkins, a Federal Employee, in 1967 and when he was transferred to the Maryland area, she worked with the Hyattsville/Washington, D.C. Social Services Agencies that care for abandoned or unwanted infants. Later, she and her husband lived in Baltimore, Maryland for approximately 11 years before being able to return to Knoxville in 1980.
She became the Executive Director of the Knoxville Women's Center and a former Administrative Assistant for the Greater Knoxville Beautification Board. She also organized and implemented Jackie's Sorensons Aerobic Dancing Program in Knoxville and acted as Coordinator. Later, she was one of the founding members of the Knoxville Happy Bookers Book Club, a group of girls that would get together approximately once a month and discuss books that they found interesting.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George Henry Miles Manning II and his wife, Mildred Williams Manning.
Survivors include her brother, George Henry Miles Manning III; nephew, George Manning IV; spouse, Douglas Merritt Jenkins; son, Douglas Merritt Manning Jenkins (wife, Jennifer Jenkins); grandchildren: Warren Arledge "Wren" Jenkins, and Miles Hendricks Jenkins.
She was cremated by Rose Mortuary (Kingston Pike). There will be a celebration of her life to be arranged at a later date.
