Annie Phillips Obituary
Sumter, SC Annie Nell "Ann" Powers Phillips, age 89, died on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at her residence.
Born in Barbour County, AL, she was the daughter of the late James Monroe Powers and Annie Lee Smith Powers. Ann is described by her family as a wonderful woman with a gypsy heart. She was a master gardener who also enjoyed sewing and was a ceramics instructor. As a very talented and artistic lady, Ann was an avid quilter. She loved very vibrant and bold colors which became evident in the quilts that she created. In 2022, she received the very prestigious Jean Harris Folk Heritage Award in the category of quilt making. Her sense of humor was just as vibrant as the colors she used in her quilting and gardening. Her true joy in life came from her love of family. She will be remembered as a very loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Surviving to cherish her memory are; a son, Henry W. Phillips, Jr. of Sumter, SC; a daughter, Suzanne P. Brooks of Sumter; a brother, Jimmy E. Powers and his wife Diane of Abbeville, AL; a granddaughter, Catherine "Cat" Brooks-Farmer and her husband Eddie of Sumter, SC; two great grandchildren, Mackenzie Machado and her husband Deyling, and Abigail Farmer; a very special cousin, Thomas Layton of Blue Springs, AL; and a nephew, Willie Branch and Ben Kyzer of Columbia, SC, and numerous additional cousins, nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by four brothers, J.C. Powers, Morrell Powers, Edward L. Powers, and Wallace Powers, and two sisters, Jewel Segars, and Myrtle Lisenby.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2023, at 1:00 pm in the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel. The interment will immediately follow the service in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, on Saturday, December 9, 2023, from 12:00-1:00 pm at Bullock Funeral Home.
