Portal, Georgia Annie Maude (Lee) Spells, a woman of profound faith and unwavering devotion to her family and community, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones at her family home in Portal, Georgia, on September 15, 2025. She was 93 years old. Born on November 1, 1931, Annie Maude was the eldest child of Dan Lee and Inez (Mincey) Lee. While she spent most of her life in Bulloch County, she also resided in New York for fourteen years and spent her last days in Portal. Known affectionately as "Maude" or Mrs. Maude, she received her early education up to the eighth grade. Though she did not complete high school, Maude possessed remarkable literacy and mathematical skills. She embraced life with a humble and vibrant spirit, rising above challenges with resilience and strength. Those who knew Maude recognized her genuine heart and respectful nature. She lived by the principle, "Treat others the way you would want to be treated." For over four decades, Maude dedicated herself to her family as a homemaker. Her caring nature and unwavering reliability extended far beyond her home. She was known for always being ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Maude was a skilled cook, gardener, and quilter. Her apple tarts, cakes, pies, and biscuits were legendary, and she delighted in preparing favorite dishes for visiting family and friends. Her faith was the cornerstone of her existence. Regardless of her location, she sought fellowship with like-minded believers and enjoyed attending services at the Kingdom Hall in Statesboro, GA. Even as her health declined, she embraced technology, mastering the use of an iPad to attend church meetings via Zoom, demonstrating both her spiritual commitment and adaptability. Maude married Burman Spells at an early age, and together they raised eleven children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Burman Spells; an infant son, Curtis Spells; her daughter, Peggy Ann Herington; two grandsons, Samuel Cornelius Spells and Randy Raymond Jr.; one granddaughter, LaJasmine Spells; her parents, Dan and Inez Lee; her brothers, Frank Lee and Jack Lee; her sisters, Arelene Torrance and Sonya Lee; and her brother-in-law, Eleaser Carter.
