ANTHONY D. CORTESE
MASSENA – Anthony D. Cortese, 81, a longtime resident of Martin Street, passed away Saturday afternoon, August 10, 2024 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital.
Tony was born September 20, 1942 in Massena, the son of the late Philip and Mary (Cuzzocrea) Cortese. He attended Washington School before going to Massena High School. In 1959 he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he achieved his GED. Tony proudly served his country in the Air Force until his honorable discharge in 1963. He then enlisted in the US Army Reserves, serving for nearly 30 years. On October 21, 1961, he married Janice Ann Bauer at St. Aloysius Gonzaga Catholic Church in Spokane, Washington.
In addition to his military service, Tony worked for a time at Massena Banking Trust, General Motors, and various construction companies before starting his working career at Alcoa, where he retired in 2001 as Water Treatment Operator. He also helped in the construction of the Massena Free Clinic. Tony was a communicant of The Church of the Sacred Heart and many local civic and Veterans organizations including, Boy Scouts of America, Jr Chamber of Commerce, Massena Chamber of Commerce, Local 420 Union Representative, Massena Senior Citizens, Knights of Columbus #1141, Italian American Civic Club, Elks Lodge #1710, Moose Lodge #1110, American Legion Post #79, VFW Post #1143, the Gerald R. Roy Amvets Post #4, and the St. Lawrence County Veterans Association. Tony was a "Mr. Fix-it" guy who enjoyed carpentry and repair work and refinishing furniture. He also enjoyed photography, and doing artwork – especially Hobo Art.
Tony was a loving and honorable man, a wonderful father and good husband who always put his family first and foremost. He was well known, well-liked by many and will be sorely missed.
Tony is survived by his wife, Janice; his sons, Anthony M. and Sue Cortese of Holland, Michigan, Joseph P. Cortese and Tammy Middlemiss of Massena, and Philip S. Cortese of Massena; his grandchildren, April, Michaela (Jared), Miranda (Matt), Alicia, Anthony (Cora), and Bailey, a chosen granddaughter, Aften; great grandchildren, Dylan, Cody, Thea, and Iyla; his sisters, Angie (Jim) Sprague of Pine City, New York, Ann (Geof) Fenwick of Farmingdale, Long Island, Loretta Cortese (Jim Burnett) of Norfolk, Phyllis Ferro of Massena, and Linda Lundy of Rotterdam; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Dominick Cortese on July 26, 1995 and a brother-in-law, Domenick Ferro on June 19, 2024.
Arrangements are under the care and guidance of the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, however there will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on August 26th at 10:00 AM at the Church of the Sacred Heart. Burial with military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Massena.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may consider memorial contributions to be made to a charity of one's choice.
