Anthony F. "Tony" Mastro
Anthony F. "Tony" Mastro, 85, passed away on Saturday, January 4, 2025 at his home in Upper St. Clair, PA after a long struggle with Parkinson's Disease. He was born on May 2, 1939 in Chicago, IL to Americo and Isabella Mastro, the second of their three children. He was surrounded by his family, including his wife of 62 years, Lois (Pasquale) along with his children, Lisa Moretti (Paul), Paula Swanton (Jim), Marc Mastro (Amy), Pete Mastro (Beth) and Anthony L Mastro (Sharon). Tony had 11 grandchildren, Christina, Anthony, Michael, Mia, James, Magdalena, Anna, Brendan, Anthony J., Gwyneth A. and Thomas J. He was preceded in death by his siblings Mary Gedraitis and Donald Mastro.
Tony was a proud graduate of Loyola University, class of 1962 and served admirably in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he acquired his middle initial to appease a drill sergeant who refused to believe he didn't have a middle name. He started his career at US Steel, Gary Works that same year and served in accounting and finance roles before settling his family in Pittsburgh in 1973. He had a great love for his adopted hometown and was a representative for the Pittsburgh Associates group that kept the Pirates from leaving the city. He helped to spin off Aristech Chemical from the USX chemical division, and was instrumental in orchestrating its successful IPO. He served as Aristech's Chief Financial Officer and ultimately negotiated its sale to Mitsubishi.
Retirement came in 1995 which allowed him to serve a philanthropic role with his parish, St. Louise de Marillac and on the boards of the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater, Pittsburgh Opera, Carlow University, and Catholic Charities to name a few. A devout Catholic, he fulfilled a lifetime dream of having an audience with Pope John Paul II. Tony was a long time member of St Clair Country Club where he golfed regularly, but not well, with friends and family. He had a continuing quest, but never found the perfect driver. His motto seemed to be to play quickly rather than to score well.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, January 9 at 10:30AM at St. Louise de Marillac Church - St. Catherine Laboure Parish, 310 McMurray Rd., Upper St. Clair with internment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery immediately following. All family and friends are welcomed to a reception and visitation to be held at St. Clair Country Club on Thursday, January 9 from 4-7pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Louise de Marillac School (https://stlouiseschoolpa.org/).
