Anthony Patnode Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hogg Funeral Home & Crematory on Jul. 23, 2024.
Anthony Louis Patnode of Hayes, Virginia, was born in Newport News, Virginia, on January 22, 1988. Surrounded by his family, he peacefully departed this life on July 20, 2024, at the age of 36, following a courageous battle with brain cancer. Anthony was kind, generous, humble, and loved helping others. He worked as an insurance adjustor until his health failed. He was an avid sports fan, enjoyed fishing, video games, and watching classic movies, and had a lively sense of humor. He also enjoyed discussing current events with his grandfather. He was preceded in death by his father, Christopher Patnode. He is survived by a son, Cooper Fritz of Chester; his mother, Lynne Bunner (Greg) and his brother Reid of Ivor; his grandmother, Claudette Wiseman of Ohio; his grandparents, Louis and Carol Patnode of Hayes; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is also survived by his faithful canine companion, Bella. We are especially thankful to Michael Hall, Anthony's lifelong friend, who drove Anthony to appointments and spent time with him throughout his illness, and to Nona Merrill, who helped lead young adults to Christ through her ministry in the youth group at Bellamy United Methodist Church. We are deeply appreciative to Dr. Haggerty and his staff, to the oncology team at Virginia Commonwealth University, and to the radiology department at the University of Maryland Medical Center, all of whom provided extraordinary medical care and compassion throughout Anthony's illness. We end this chapter of Anthony's story with gratitude to the Lord for sending him into our lives. He will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by his family and friends. A funeral service will be held at Saint James On-The-Glebe Anglican Church, 6124 Abingdon Glebe Lane, Gloucester, on Saturday, August 10, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. If desired, memorial gifts may be made to the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society at PO Box 385, Gloucester, VA 23061. "For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16. Service under the direction of Hogg Funeral Home.

Last year, I met Tony as a co-worker. From the first day, Tony brought a joyful energy to the whole team. He uplifted us through sharing stories and telling jokes. Tony was a professional who worked hard and cared for his colleagues.

Brad and I feel blessed to have met your dear grandson, Anthony. I am so glad that I got to hug Anthony and pray for him each day in my morning prayers. He was truly blessed with the love and dedication of his grandparents, Lou and Carol Patnode. God has received him into His arms. We send love and sympathy to all of Anthony's family.

To my fellow cancer warrior. I´m sorry you lost your fight Anthony. We were in this together. Two classmates battling different forms of aggressive cancer. You gave me insight and light when there was darkness. I encouraged you to fight and fight. My memories of you from high school and into adult hood will be memories I look back on often. It was enlightening to have conversations with you knowing you knew exactly what I was talking about and how I felt. You were an amazing friend and we will meet again one day.

I met Anthony back at a church retreat many, many years ago. We just from then, became close. We stayed up all night talking like we had known each other for years. He´s the only person who was consistent in my life and cared about me, and then my children when they came along. Then fast forward I called a debt consolidation place, wouldn´t you know who was on the other end, him. We just laughed. He definitely took a piece of my heart when he left.
