MASSENA – Lawrence J. Patnode, 76, passed away Tuesday evening, January 6, 2026 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital.
Larry was born in Malone on January 20, 1949, the son of the late Lawrence and Theresa (Bova) Patnode. He attended schools in Malone, graduating from Franklin Academy in 1966. Following his graduation, he entered the United States Air Force, proudly serving his country in Vietnam, until his honorable discharge on June 3, 1971. He married Donna Johnson in 1973 and was blessed with 5 children.
Larry first worked with his parents in the family auto parts store, B&P Auto Parts in Malone. He later obtained employment at Alcoa and during layoffs he drove trucks for Collins Feed in Malone. Larry was forced to retire in 1994 due to a heart attack that caused him heart failure. In 1995, Larry was given the gift of life by having a heart transplant from donor William Jeromia Barnwell, an 18 year old man from South Carolina, known as Jeromia to his family. He cherished this gift by honoring his donor for 30 years. Larry was an active communicant of St. Peter's Parish, serving for many funeral masses at all the churches. He enjoyed the fellowship of the Alcoa Retirees Luncheon Group and was a member of the Massena Rod and Gun Club. His greatest passions were spending time with his grandchildren and his motorcycle. He also enjoyed hot air balloons, RC helicopters, and chasing trains with his grandsons.
Larry is survived by his children, Deena Monroe (Jennifer) of Massena, Jay L. Patnode and Andre Patnode, both of North Carolina, and Danielle Patnode (Joe) of Massena; his grandchildren, Nathaniel and Jayden Patnode and Eran McDonald; his sisters, Marlene Perham (Harold) of Malone, Diane Covell (Bruce) of Fishersville, Virginia, Melanie Lemire (Mario) of Constable; his brothers, Richard Patnode of Malone and Allan Patnode (Rick) of Albany; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by an infant daughter, Melissa Patnode in 1984.
Arrangements are under the care and guidance of the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, however there will be no services at this time. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated later in 2026 at a time to be announced with burial with military honors in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Malone.
Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to St. Peter's Parish and register as an organ donor in honor and memory of Larry.
