Anthony Schiavo Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bradley, Brough & Dangler Funeral Home - Summit on Feb. 27, 2026.
Anthony David Schiavo passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends, on February 20, 2026, in Summit, NJ.

Born in 1936 in Monreale, Sicily-a town renowned for its 11th-century cathedral and extraordinary Byzantine mosaics-Anthony was deeply inspired by his heritage. He joined the National Society of Mural Painters and built a distinguished career designing and executing original mosaics.

After establishing his own business in 1965, he contributed to numerous high-profile projects. His notable achievements include installing Byzantine-style mosaics on the vault of the Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Washington, D.C., and restoring ancient Roman mosaics for Princeton and Harvard Universities. Throughout his career, he created countless works for churches, government buildings, hospitals, schools, and private residences.

His professional legacy includes serving as the Curator of Mosaic Art at the Princeton University Art Museum and as the Master of Mosaic Art at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. He also held the distinction of being the only Sicilian artist to have a mural featured in an American museum.

One of his significant later projects involved the restoration of a mosaic originally designed by Hildreth Meiere for the Prudential Financial headquarters. This piece, depicting Hercules' journey through the Strait of Gibraltar, is now housed at the Newark Museum. Additionally, in 2005, he designed and executed the "Doors to Democracy" mosaic, located at the Bassett Building in Summit, New Jersey.

A longtime resident of Summit, NJ, and a dedicated member of the Lions Club, Anthony is survived by his wife, Ada, and his son, Adriano.
