Our beloved Anthony Charles Stephenson, affectionately known as "Top Cat," peacefully transitioned into eternal rest on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at the age of 66. Anthony was born on August 18, 1958, in
Saginaw, MI, to Alma Johnson and Robert Stephenson.
From an early age, Anthony's faith was a guiding force in his life. He was baptized at Truevine Missionary Baptist Church and later continued his Christian journey at Rosehill Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of his grandfather, Rev. Levi Patten. In his later years, he became a devoted member of Greater Solid Rock Baptist Church, where he served faithfully as an usher and trustee under the leadership of Pastor Ernest L. Reed.
A gifted athlete, Anthony attended St. Stephen's High School, where he shined as a standout basketball player, earning the honor of Michigan All-State Basketball Player twice. His passion for the game led him to Saginaw Valley State University, where he continued both his academic and athletic career. As a star player, he displayed exceptional talent on the court while also excelling in his studies, earning a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration.
Anthony dedicated much of his professional life to working with youth. He served as a Youth Behavioral Technician at Wolverine and contributed his care and guidance in various group homes. His kindness, patience, and ability to connect with others made a lasting impact on the lives he touched.
Beyond his career and faith, Anthony found joy in life's simple pleasures. He loved listening to music, going to the movie theater, and surrounding himself with family and friends. A true people person, his warmth and vibrant personality made him a joy to be around. He especially cherished the time spent with his mother, listening to gospel music together on YouTube during many mornings and afternoons.
Above all, Anthony's greatest love was his son, Aireus. He cherished him with all his heart, and Aireus was his entire world.
Anthony was blessed to share his life with the love of his life, Sheila R. Morris-Stephenson.He was a loving father to Aireus S. Stephenson and Felicia M. Morris. An amazing grandfather to Aireus Stephenson II, Demaria Swilley, Bryce Morris, Brandon Landin, Crystal Landin, and Ashlyn Morris; Great grandchildren, Ameirr, Karter, Gioanna, and Brandon. Anthony is survived by his beloved mother, Alma Johnson, whose love and guidance shaped him into the man he became. He also leaves behind two devoted brothers, Eric Stephenson and Delano (Arnice) Stephenson. Six nieces: Brenae, R'riyae, Renae, Charquia, Justice, and Amber; three nephews, Marquavius, Derrick, and Andre. He was also surrounded by the love of his aunts: Mozella Reed, Kay Coates, Linda Coates, Donna Coates; and his uncles, Elijah Coates, Johnny Kelly, Ben Washington, and Tommy Bennett. Through marriage, Anthony gained a loving extended family, including his Sisters-in-law, Carla(Andre) Mason, Juanita(Will) Santiago; and Brother-in-law, Charles H. Morris. A host of cousins and friends whom he loved deeply. Special brothers Tony Stevenson, Derek Mason, Eric Robinson, Ed Green, Ref, Parris(Peanut),Robert Al-Amin, Billy Ware, Charles Stidhum, Chris Eddington, Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Alday, and Larry Wilson.
Anthony was preceded in death by his father Robert C. Stephenson; son, Donovan Morris; brother Derrick Stephenson; sister Roshawnda Johnson. Grandparents Levi and Flora Patten, Roosevelt and Esther Coates, Thomas and Emma Stephens. His aunt Monica(Weedie) Coates Sister-in-law Beverly "Kay" Stephenson; Nephew Omar McKnight; Step Father Jesse Johnson; Father and Mother-in-Law Charles and Juanita Morris; special friend Mike Petterson.
The family would like to express special thanks to Great Lakes PACE, Pastor Ernest Reed, Devondrae Blair, and Demario Corley for their care and support, especially in assisting Anthony with transportation. A special thank you to Derek Mason, Tony Stevenson, and Michelle Blair for coming by and spending quality time with him, no matter what they had to do. A heartfelt appreciation to The Greater Solid Rock Church, New Mt. Calvary Church, Ms. Ke'Shondra Reed, and Evans/Browne's Funeral Home for their unwavering love, kindness, and support.
Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 22, 2025 at New Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 3610 Russell St.,
Saginaw, MI 48601. Pastor Ernest L. Reed will officiate. Interment will take place in Forest Lawn Cemetery, 3210 S. Washington Ave.,
Saginaw, MI 48601. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday at Greater Solid Rock Baptist Church, 605 Meade St.,
