Dear Mrinal,
I don´t know when you will see this message. My Dad was your Dad´s Commanding Officer in Udhampur (Buster Bains). My Dad passed in Aug2023.
Anto Uncle found my number and we had such long conversations - all of last year. He gave me so many stories of his time in 131 and my Dad as the CO. My Dad was very fond of you Dad and considered him one of his favorite officers.
We have such lovely long conversations - he showed me a side of my Dad´s professional life I was not aware off. I had been trying to reach him for a few months now - on his phone, but I now understand why I could get through.
I´m in shock - as I stumbled on the page - as I was free searching some other contact for him.
My heart felt condolences to you and your Mum. I´d like to speak/ message you sometime.
Regards
Tiesta Bains

First memory is playing basketball in 1980 Jan in NDA Team.
He was such a jovial person, always happy and made others happy by his practical funny pranks. Last I met him in USA where he was doing tremendous service and help to all who were travelling around New York.

Anthony Subbiah, a kind-hearted and gentle soul, leaving behind a legacy of love, compassion, and warmth.
Anthony lived a life marked by his passion for helping others, his love for reading, and his joy in cooking. An avid golfer, he found serenity on the greens. But above all, he cherished time with his family and friends.
Anthony is survived by his loving wife, Meeta, and their son, Mirnal. His family was the center of his universe, and he was deeply devoted to them.
Those who knew Anthony will remember him as a thorough gentleman, always willing to lend a helping hand, offer a listening ear, and share a warm smile. His generosity, kindness, and humility inspired countless lives.
As we mourn the loss of this extraordinary individual, we take comfort in the memories we shared with him. May his spirit continue to inspire us to live with empathy, compassion, and love.
Rest in peace, dear Anthony. Your legacy will live on in our hearts.

Anto uncle came into my life as blessing. He was my dad´s friend who provided support to us in a time of need, in a time when our family was lost. His presence was a Godsend. I spent a lot of time with uncle before I went to college to get help. He was a great example to me of how a person should be. Anto uncle was a savior, a guide and an inspiration. You made ripples in my life that are hard to imagine and explain. Uncle I´ll always miss and remember you. Thank you so much and rest in peace!

2014 World Cup Netherlands vs Costa Rica. I think it was my dad, brother and I, who had come to Anto uncle´s house to work on my college essays and had taken a break to watch the match. The match ended in draw and went to penalties. This is where the fun and the madness started. All of us were discussing the game excited in the last moments before the final whistle and Netherlands made a goalkeeper change just for the shootout. Everyone questioning the decision. What is going on?! Confused, excited, intrigued. We start guessing where we think the penalty is gonna go and this keeper starts saving them. Antics. Doing everything to throw off the shooters. Talking trash. Shouting. And all of us at Anto uncle´s house loved it. The keeper had a legendary performance and that´s all we talked about for the rest of the day. One of my favorite World Cup memories that was shared with Anto uncle. He will be missed. May he rest in peace.

What will I always remember ? (More like what I can never forget). His endless generosity.
One summer in the US, before I could reach him in New Jersey as scheduled, I fell very ill. Good old Ant didn't waste any time driving through the night to DC to take me home and nurse me back to reasonable health. He would brush off 'thank you' s like they were flies.
That was Anto all over

Anto was more than just a friend to me-he was a friend, brother, and savior all rolled into one. He was always extremely respectful and lovingly called me Mrs G. When we were new to the USA, he welcomed us with open arms. As a mother, I admired this thoughtfulness of sending his son Mrinal to take out our boys Rohin and Ramit for the paint ball and make sure they felt at home. I found him to be a well-read man, a charmer, and a great talker, with a wealth of stories to share. The last time we met, he spoke with such pride and love about his family. His kindness and generosity were boundless, and he never hesitated to help anyone in need. Anto´s golden heart touched our lives in a way we will never forget. We are deeply grateful for his friendship and the countless ways he supported us. He will be greatly missed, but his memory will always live on in our hearts.
May you rest in peace, dear Anto.

"Anto was a treasured friend of 41 years. Our bond began in 1983, sparked by 'Tich & Rambo' in Guwahati. When he left for the USA, we shared a poignant goodbye at Hindon, but distance couldn't diminish our connection. Over the decades, I cherished our reunions in New York and the unforgettable moments we created in Sparta. Anto's unwavering kindness, warm smile, and generous heart were truly one-of-a-kind. His passing leaves a void, but the memories of our time together will be forever etched in my heart and in the lives of all who knew him. Rest in peace, dear Anto. Your friendship was a precious gift, and I will miss you dearly." - Rakesh Sharma

Anto Sir was my First Flying Instructor.
A large hearted human being who was always cheerful and full of enthusiasm.
I will cherish for the rest of my life the fond memories of being together with him in BFTS. Initially I thought that I might not make the grade in flying. But he painstakingly ensured that I made it to the next stage with focus and positive attitude.
Today whatever I have achieved, a lot of credit goes to Anto Sir.
May the Almighty rest his noble soul in peace and give strength to his family in this hour of grief !!

I first met Anto in in our teens when he joined Delta Squadron at the National Defence Academy as my Division Junior (Division Junior is someone you took care of in the Academy). Anto was always cheerful, physically fit, and full of energy. He was always giving his best in everything; both in team spirit and devotion to duty. From the very beginning, we clicked as I was an academy footballer and he an academy basketballer. We had a running joke right from the Academy days-Anto and I could never agree on how to play the ball; with the hands or the legs. While I would talk about the challenges of controlling the ball with legs, he would root for the challenges about dribbling the ball with hands and then jumping up to score a basket.
Anto and I shared many memorable moments at the Academy, but our friendship took off when we both joined the helicopter stream of the Indian Air Force. Our paths crossed often during various Air Force exercises and firepower demonstrations. Anto excelled in his career, serving in numerous operational squadrons and instructional institutions like Udhampur, Guwahati, Trivandrum, Allahabad, Hyderabad, and Jodhpur and then went on to became the youngest flight commander of a Mi-17 Sqn . Anto had a knack for taking things to new heights-literally also. But what truly set him apart was his natural skills of flying. Even when he was a junior pilot, his Commanding Officer would pick Anto over a group of seasoned senior pilots for some tricky operations at high-altitude helipads in Leh. He loved to talk. I would tease him, saying, that he could kill the enemy with his monologue. And Anto, without missing a beat would respond by saying: "Why waste ammunition when words can do the same job."
In 1997-98, Anto left the Indian Air Force, but the fauji spirit remained in his heart. That spirit of service, camaraderie, and loyalty stayed with him.
Beyond his professional achievements, what truly set Anto apart was his heart. I think he believed in the saying that you only live once. Anto was one of the best friends anyone could ask for. He was always giving, sharing, and helping without expecting anything in return. I would say `Blessed are those who had Anto as a friend´. He had the extraordinary ability to find goodness in every situation, and in all the years I knew him, I never once heard him speak ill of anyone. Such a quality is rare in this world today.
We reconnected when I moved to the US in 2013. And boy, was I glad to meet him again. Anto was nothing short of a godsend for me and my family. To put it simply, I would not have survived in this country without his help. When Anto learned that I was down and out, he offered me a job without a moment´s hesitation, even though I had no knowledge or experience in that field. Thanks to him, I was able to provide for my family in the US. We had nothing to give back in return, except for our prayers-prayers for his happiness, his well-being, and his long life. My wife, Archana, prayed for him every single day. But the Lord Almighty had other plans, needing good people like Anto. If the deeds on this planet are of any consideration, I have no doubts that God will be taking good care of him and place him on the highest pedestal.
Anto´s loss leaves a void that cannot be filled and I will miss him dearly. To me anto was more than just a friend-he was a brother.
He loved to fly as much as he loved to talk and teach. So today, when I look up, I can´t help but smile and think, "There goes Anto, probably up there talking to the clouds into staying in formation."
Rest in Peace brother.

My first flying Instructor at Basic Flying Training school in Prayagraj (then Allahabad) in Uttar Pradesh, India. Gem of a person. Would let us handle the plane without any interference and fear(lol). We would feel scared that he´s letting us handle the plane all alone. Very fond memories from 1989. He would teach us, maybe beat us too, later call us for debriefing at his Resident Officers quarter right outside the cadets mess, and debrief would be `kya peeyega´. And the debrief would be over with 2-3 large drinks.
Will miss you Sir.
A big salute for teaching us flying.

Anto, as we always called him, had been a friend beyond description. A complete human being.
I first met him on my posting to 131 FAC Flt at Udhampur in October1983. We went into Siachen area - Op Meghdoot together. It tested all of us with our skills to the core. Anto was one of the pillars as an angel pilot who never got tired of flying operational missions.
Rest of my association with him will need a book to describe.
We rarely find a compassionate and caring soul like him in this word.
We pray that his soul gets the best in the world in the new physical form or merges with the ultimate.

At this moment, all I can comprehend is how good Ant was to me over the forty years that I've known him, starting with our very first posting in Udhampur (131).
For the next five years, we, the then 131 youngsters (count me in, I was just one of the boys) partied together, ate and danced and made merry. Ant also went on to become one of my favorite babysitters, Anup sharing the honors with him.
When I spoke to him a few days before he passed, he was cheerful as usual, making light of his illness, telling me to stay chirpy and switch off the waterworks. I wish I had told him just how much we care, in those words. Ant was talking
briskly, telling me - Maal, enjoy your life.
So Ant, take that great big heart of yours wherever you go.
RIP, Ant, you're the best, they don't make them like you any more

A witty charmer,a story teller with a gift of captivating his audience with countless exciting tales from slices of his life which at times left us in stitches. His unique relationship with Hindi made him struggle a bit but he certainly had a surprising knack for cursing in it.
A man of fine taste ,having an exceptional palate, connoisseur of good food and knew how to turn every meal into a feast.
His warmth as a host was unparalleled - welcoming and generous.A dependable friend and a man of his words .In a world that often felt like a round hole ,he was a square lid.
That's what Antony M Subbiah was to my family and me .
His authenticity was his strength and it's what makes him unforgettable.
Anto, you've made it a point to live on even in the memories of those who met you briefly.
Your stories ,your laughter, your kindness will continue to resonate within us.Your by absence will be deeply felt.
You will be missed dearly my friend .
Until we meet again .Rest in peace dear Anto

Had some lovely memories of the times we spent together in Gauhati and detachments in Ziro .Some very scary flying experiences which we negotiated together.
Evenings were always a Grand Celebration , with Anto making some lovely non veg dishes.
Never had a dull moment.
He had been periodically giving a call to me , always checking on the welfare of my wife and two children, by their first names and even guiding them in their profession.
He kept on inviting me , telling that he wants us there before he sells of his house- he always insisted that he will finance our travel up and down- but unfortunately we couldn´t make it .
Last call a couple of days before his demise, he sort of gave a feeling of giving up and he doesn´t believe in faith - when I insisted, he told me that he Wii try and wait till we meet

Anto sir was a mentor to me. I served with him in two helicopter units and we became great friends and often spent lot of time together discussing anything under the sun; mostly professional. He always guided me on all issues. I have extremely pleasant memories of him. I last met him in Jun 22 when I visited Jearsy. He really went out of the way in looking after me despite his I'll health.
I prey to Jesus to keep him in good state because he was such a helpful and kind person.
