Anthony Wagner Obituary

Published by D. O. McComb and Sons - Maplewood Park on Nov. 23, 2010.
Anthony "Tony" A. Wagner was born in Dubuque, Iowa on September 20, 1921 to George and Margaret Wagner. He was a Master Sergeant with the US Army Combat Engineers in WWII in the Philippine Islands and New Guinea. Through the GI Bill, in 1950 he was graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in mechanical engineering and earned his Professional Engineer License shortly afterward. He married his wife, Shirley, on May 31, 1947, a union that lasted 60 years until Shirley's death in 2007. He was active in the AMVETs and the Knights of Columbus in Cedar Falls, Iowa, being the first Grand Knight of Council 4516. He worked at Wayne Pump & Tokheim in Fort Wayne before accepting a position as V.P. of Engineering at Viking Pump in Cedar Falls, Iowa, from which he retired in 1985. He was a member of Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church. He enjoyed playing euchre, fishing in Canada and hunting in Iowa with his sons, son-in-law, grandsons, and great grandsons. He enjoyed golfing, tending to a large garden, family gatherings and attending his children’s and grandchildren’s school events and special activities. He loved working with his hands and helping out his children with home building projects. His handcrafted sandboxes, wooden bunny Easter baskets and critter keepers will be forever treasured by each of his grandchildren. He was always there when you needed him, giving unselfishly and always with a twinkle in his eye. Survivors include children Tom (Jeanne) Wagner, Tim (Karen) Wagner, Terry (Yvonne) Wagner, Tammy (Bob) Warner, Tracy (Phil) Roach, Trudy (Brandon) Landers, and Tony (Elaine) Wagner, all of Fort Wayne; grandchildren Carrie (Scott) Heck, Katie (Nathan) Steigmeyer, Jim (Erin) Wagner, and Mollie (Dan) Briney, Joe, Emily, and Susie Wagner, Alyssa, Melanie, and Nick Wagner, Kristin, Kelli, Daniel, Megan, and Erika Warner, Tom, Jessica, and Jennifer Roach, Tyler, Taylor, and Trevor Landers, and Irina Wagner; great-grandchildren, Zac, Abbie and Jack Heck, Ben, Maggie and Nicholas Steigmeyer, Allison Wagner, Grace, George, Gus Wagner. Brothers George of St Louis, MO, Leo of Rochester, MN, Walt of Thomasville, GA; Sisters Mary Ann Theisen, Margaret Doerr, Dorothy Eisbach, all of Dubuque, IA and Helen O’Leary of Copake, NY. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, parents, stepmother, Carrie Wagner, brothers John and Joseph and son, Teddy Wagner in 1964. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Good Hope, with burial in the Catholic Cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at D.O. McComb & Sons Maplewood Park Funeral Home, 4017 Maplecrest Road in Fort Wayne, where there will be a 4:30 p.m. rosary, and calling for an hour before Mass Monday at the church. Tim and Tom, sorry to hear about your loss. Ann lost her dad several years ago, it was a sad time. And I lost my mom before that, much like you guys. Enjoy your family, as obviously your dad did. Life is short. We'll say a prayer for you and your dad. Take care, Don

Fisherman. Gentleman. Family Man. Your Dad & Grandpa certainly was a special guy. We have witnessed an incredible example of a family’s love over the past few years, as you each spent time and had dinner with him on “your day.” What a gift - as nothing made him happier than being with his family. You have all been in our thoughts during this sad week, but we know you are comforted that he is enjoying eternal life with Shirley. His eyes twinkle once again. Much love and hugs all around…
