Mr. Antoine M. Mitchell, 65, of
Cairo, Illinois was born December 22, 1960, to the late Alfreddie Sr. and Adrean (Sowers) Mitchell. Born the second oldest of eight children, Antoine (affectionately known as Twan) passed away peacefully Saturday, March 7, 2026, at 6:22 a.m. at Mercy Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He was a beloved husband, father, son, uncle, and friend who lived life to the fullest, and whose life was marked by his hard work, mistakes, faith, kind heart, love for his family, and let's not forget his sense of humor.
Antoine attended school in the Meridian and Egyptian School Districts, making many lifelong friends along the way. He was active in sports and enjoyed hanging out with his friends, attending the movies and dances throughout his school years. Antoine left the Southern Illinois area and made a life in Elgin, Illinois, where he worked and established himself in that area. He worked at Progressive Plastics as a lineman, and through hard work and dedication to the job he progressed to a supervisory position which he held for many years. In addition to this he also worked as a Mental Health Technician for many years at Elgin Mental Health Center, which is also where he met Florence Rene Monroe who after many years of dating became his wife. On October 9, 1996, Antoine and Rene married and shared many years of love and companionship until their separation in 2006. They maintained a close friendship and helped each other over the years until her passing. To this union their daughter, Sheena Rene Mitchell, was born, whom they both loved dearly. Antoine was also well known for his skills in drywalling, carpentry, tiling, plumbing, some mechanics, and other handyman skills. After many years of city life, he returned home to Southern Illinois and reestablished himself in the area of his youth.
Antoine was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Rene Mitchell; parents, Alfreddie and Adrean Mitchell; brothers, Edward Leroy and Tirrell Ramone Mitchell; sisters, Rowena Michelle Mitchell and Lela "PeeWee" Howard; loving nephew, Tramone Larell Mitchell; maternal grandparents, Jessie and Pearline Sowers; and paternal grandparents, Willie Roberson and Rosetta (Anderson) Patterson.
