It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Antonio "Tony" Pesce, age 90, of Hockessin, Delaware, on Sunday, November 9th, at his home surrounded by his loving children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Born in San Donato Val Di Comino, Italy, Tony arrived in America as a teenager. He immediately served in the National Guard while also beginning a distinguished career as a Master Stonemason. Tony returned to Italy to marry his childhood sweetheart, Gerarda, who he often described as his "destiny, his love, his life." Together, they built a family rooted in unwavering support, devotion, and love. The love they shared was the foundation of a home that will forever be remembered for its warmth, joy, and strength.
As a Master Stonemason, Tony's craftsmanship was renowned, and his legacy is etched in stone across the region, including iconic landmarks like the Brandywine Zoo, the Veterans Memorial, and countless homes and businesses transformed by his artistry.
Tony was a dedicated Trustee of the Giuseppe Verdi Lodge, where he proudly served as a member for many decades. His life was enriched by a remarkable array of talents-he was self-taught on the mandolin, piano, and guitar, and found immense joy in sharing his music with family and friends. Tony's passions extended beyond music; he delighted in spending time playing bocce, a game that brought camaraderie with friends and family. He also enjoyed lively card games, where his good-natured spirit and quick wit shone through. Additionally, Tony possessed a keen eye for photography, capturing treasured moments and everyday beauty. These interests enriched his life and reflected the joy he found in sharing simple pleasures with those around him.
Above all, Tony devoted himself to his family. Together, they traveled the world, sharing adventures that deepened their bonds and created lifelong memories. Tony found immense joy in organizing celebrations-whether family gatherings or milestone events-which became cherished memories for all. These moments, woven together through love and togetherness, will remain in the hearts of his family. He loved deeply, led and protected us with strength, and guided us with wisdom and grace.
Tony is survived by his beloved children: Rita Hollingsworth (Larry), Donna Pesce, Carla Hoffman, Teresa Brown (Kevin), and Anthony Pesce (Margaret). He also leaves behind his sister, Lucia Mazzola, as well as his grandchildren, Ashley, Taylor (Logan), Anthony (Kathryn), Amanda (Jeff), Alexandra, Joshua (Sophia), Conner (Courtney), Lauren (Nick), Alexis, Anthony (Kelsey), and Angela (Michael), and great-grandchildren, Brody, Gabrielle, Isabella, Teddy, Laina, Lucas, Virginia, James, Waylon, Max, Riley, and Natalie, all of whom will cherish his memory and endless love.
Tony was predeceased by his devoted wife of 54 years, Gerarda, his son, Pompeo, and his grandson, Steven.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate his life on Friday November 14th from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M. and Saturday November 15th at 10:30 A.M. at the Mealey Funeral Home, 2509 Limestone Road, Wilmington, Delaware 19808. Burial will follow at Cathedral Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Giuseppe Verdi lodge, 1806-B Newport Gap Pike Wilmington, DE 19808.
