Mr. Antonio “Tony” Sgrosso, of Waltham, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, September 4, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was 85 years old.

Born on April 9, 1940, in Avellino, Italy, Tony was the son of the late Giuseppe and Erminia (Mauriello) Sgrosso. He immigrated to the United States in 1958 at the age of 18. In 1965, he married Mary Ann Mantenuto at Sacred Heart Church in Waltham, and together they made Waltham their home, sharing 23 happy years of marriage before Mary Ann’s passing in January 1988.

Tony was an expert mason. Alongside his brother Elio, he co-founded Sgrosso Brothers, a successful masonry company that they proudly operated for many years.

Tony cherished his time at his home in Marshfield, where he and his family shared countless happy memories. He had a true passion for gardening and could grow just about anything. Being extremely resourceful, he took great pride in being able to fix anything around the house, always finding a way to make things work. Along with his kind heart he also had a great sense of humor.

True to his Italian heritage he was a fan of his hometown Avellino soccer team, and the Ferrari Formula One racing team. He also enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports and took great pride in all their accomplishments.

Tony's greatest joy came from his role as Papa to his beloved eight grandsons: Brian Duhamel, Shaun Duhamel, Shamus (Emily) Egan, Cameron Egan (Emily Finnegan), Christopher (Jaileen) Egan, Matthew Egan, Antonio Anzalone, and Dante Anzalone. He treasured every moment with them, and his home was always a place of laughter, food, and fun especially during summers and holidays. His gentle nature made him Papa not only to his family, but to many others who were fortunate enough to know him.

In addition to his grandsons. He leaves his three daughters and their husbands. Sandra and Rick Duhamel of Billerica, Christine and Shamus Egan of Waltham, and Suzanne and Frank Anzalone of Peabody; his longtime companion Elaine Pagliazzo of Natick; his brother Elio Sgrosso of Lexington; his sister Assunta Pecci of Watertown, and many nieces, nephews and their families.

He was also the brother of the late Giuseppe Sgrosso of Italy, and Carmela Abruzzese of Belmont.

Family and friends will honor and remember Antonio’s life by gathering for an evening wake at The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Wednesday, September 10th from 4 to 7 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Thursday morning before leaving in procession to Sacred Heart Church, 311 River Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Westview Cemetery, Lexington.
