Arden Osborne Carr, II, born September 13, 1950, to Juanita and Arden Carr in Akron, Ohio, lived a life defined by compassion, faith, and unwavering dedication to others. From his early days in Ohio to his final years in Northern California, Arden left a profound mark on the countless lives he touched.
A gifted musician and devoted servant, Arden graduated from Olivet Nazarene University in 1975, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Ministries. In 1980, he moved with his wife, Onna, and young children to Redding, California, where he began his ministry at First Church of the Nazarene as Minister of Music and Youth Pastor. This was just the beginning of a lifelong calling to serve youth and families.
Arden’s heart for service blossomed through his work in youth group home systems and later as a Licensed Family and Marriage Therapist, helping families find hope and healing at his own counseling center. His faith led him to play a pivotal role in Redding Specialty Hospital, where he opened and directed the Men’s Christian Unit, bringing comfort and guidance to those in need.
His journey continued as he worked in Behavioral Health in Tehama and Siskiyou Counties, where Arden’s compassion and gentle wisdom left an indelible impact. His calling to nurture young people came full circle when he established the Wellness Center at Weed Elementary School, a sanctuary for students, families, and staff. Upon his retirement, the Center was renamed the "Arden Carr Wellness Center"—a testament to the love, humility, and selflessness he showed every day.
Arden’s life was rich with music, art, sports, and, above all, treasured moments with his family. Yet his greatest gift was the example he set: a Christ-like presence, always giving, always teaching, and always believing in the potential of others. He built bridges for those who felt lost and his legacy echoes in the lives of children and communities across Northern California.
Arden did not seek recognition, though he earned it in abundance. He served quietly, steadfastly, and with deep authenticity, until he went to be with the Lord on October 9, 2025. He is survived by his wife, Wendy Woodland-Carr; his two children: his son, Alexander Carr, his wife Robyn Carr and six of Arden’s cherished grandchildren; Crystal Massey, Typanga Cox, Sarah Leonhardt, Miles Leonhardt, Joczlynn Nerdin, Talyn Carr; and Arden’s daughter, Elizabeth McGruder, and five more of Arden’s cherished grandchildren; Nathan Chatman, Jr., Jalen McGruder, Jeremiah McGruder, Keston McGruder, Niyah McGruder. Arden is also survived by his sister Patricia Filipowicz; his brother Gregory Carr, and his wife, Hannah; and his sister Pearl Kashasha and her husband David. He was preceded in death by his brothers Rodger Edward Carr and Daniel Glenn Carr.
Arden’s memory and legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him, in the programs he built, and in the hope he inspired. His was a life well-lived, and he will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
Family and friends will be received Saturday, October 25th from 11am to 1pm at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 547 Canton Rd. Akron, OH 44312. Funeral service will begin at 1pm.
