Arlene Darnell Crittenden, age 87, a lifelong resident of McHenry, IL, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2025. She was born February 13, 1938 in Fessenden, ND to her loving parents, Edgar and Eleanor (née Dablow) Rothacker. She was married for more than 65 happy and interesting years to Charles Crittenden, until his passing in January, 2024.

Arlene grew up in Chicago and enjoyed telling her children stories of her charmingly wild, Dickensian childhood, leaping from rooftops and fighting neighborhood boys. She never lost her tough independence, but softened it with a caring and friendly disposition. She met many of her friends in church, and her enduring faith was instrumental in forming and sustaining her moral and loving character.

Arlene and Charles eventually became antique dealers and established the business Windfall Antiques in McHenry. This was often difficult work, but she did it well and cherished the many enduring friendships to which it led. She was respected for her wisdom, appreciated for her wit, and loved for her kind heart. She will be sorely missed.

Arlene is survived by her siblings, Peggy Cutler and Martin Knight; children, Steven (Phyllis), Russell (Edina), and Eric; grandchildren, Matthew, Tyler, Jennie, Sarah, Joshua, Benjamin, and Whitney; and great-grandchildren, Isaac, Daniel, Mack, and Charles.

Interment will be private.

Final arrangements entrusted to Symonds-Madison Funeral Home. For more information, call 847-741-1128.
