Arlo Dean Berkland, 73, of Volga, SD passed away Thursday, February 15, 2024 at Sanford USD Medical Center, Sioux Falls, SD. Memorial Visitation will be held from 2:00pm to 4:30pm Sunday, February 18, 2024 at Rude's Funeral Home, Brookings, SD. In Lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be directed to the South Dakota Parkinson's Foundation 1000 North West Ave, Suite 220, Sioux Falls, SD 57104 or the Alzheimer's Association of South Dakota Suite 110, 5915 South Remington Place, Sioux Falls, SD 57108.
Arlo Dean Berkland was born on Janurary 9th, 1951 to Norman and Evelyn Liebnow Berkland along with his twin sister, Arlis. He was the first boy born of seven children. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He was a lifelong member of Lake Campbell Lutheran Church of rural Volga, SD. He was raised on the family farm of rural Volga, SD. He attended grade school at country school Medary District # 89, graduated from Brookings High School 1969, and attended SDSU. He joined the Brookings National Guard Transportation Unit in 1969 and served for 7 years; including participating in the National Guards clean- up of the historic Rapid City Flood of June 9, 1972.
Arlo was married to Mallory Acres of Brookings and they later divorced. He then married Patricia Torson Muldenhauer and they later divorced. Arlo remained a companion to Patricia and to her two sons, Jeremy and Joshua Moldenhauer. Arlo was devoted to his family, and to Patricia and her two sons and her grandchildren.
Arlo was a lifelong farmer. He began farming with his father Norman. They were later joined by his brother DeVern. Arlo and DeVern farmed together for 50 years. Along with farming, Arlo enjoyed cars. He liked telling or hearing a good story, visiting with his friends and neighbors, and was always willing to lend a helping hand.
Arlo was strong willed, determined and a very hard worker. The last 15 years Arlo endured many physical and medical difficulties. He just kept on trying to farm and function as good as he possibly could without ever complaining. He was known as a tough and persevering individual.
Arlo is survived by his siblings; Jo Ann Berkland Minneapolis, MN, Judy Berkland Hanson Sioux Falls, SD, Mary Ann (Michael) Eichelberg Brookings, SD, Arlis (John) Mc Shannock Maplewood, MN, DeVern (Michelle) Berkland of Volga, SD; former wife and companion Patricia Torson and her sons Jeremy and Joshua (Hollie) Moldenhauer and their children of rural Volga, SD; along with his nieces, nephews, aunts, and cousins. Arlo was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Renae Huber.
