South Yarmouth - Arthur Stephen Curran passed away on Saturday October 11 after a brief
illness, at the age of 96. Arthur was predeceased by his wife Joan E. (Mitchell) Curran, his
daughter Elaine (Curran) Laine, and his son David J. Curran. He is survived by his son Brian
Curran and daughter-in-law Patty McCormick, and their sons Stephen Curran and Timothy
Curran, along with former son-in-law Andrew Laine.
Arthur was born in Boston MA, the son of Stephen Devine Curran and Anna Melvina
(Gramer) Curran, and raised in West Roxbury, attending Boston Latin. When Arthur was
ten, his father died unexpectedly, leaving Arthur to care for his mother until she passed
away in 1974.
Arthur met his future wife while both were working at the Fireman's Fund Insurance Co. in
Boston. They were married at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Belmont on June 23, 1956,
honeymooned in Dennis Port, and initially resided in Watertown. After summering in West
Yarmouth from 1961 to 1969, Arthur and Joan moved their family there year-round in 1970,
eventually settling into a new home on the shores of Horse Pond.
After leaving Fireman's Fund, Arthur joined New England Telephone, where he worked in
sales and management for over thirty years before retiring in 1988. But his family knew he
was an engineer at heart, with an intuitive understanding and appreciation of all types of
machines. After a visit to New York's Radio City Music Hall, Arthur's fondest memory
wasn't the magnificent show - but rather the engineering that went into the hydraulic stage
elevators. And when his teenage children were learning to drive, Arthur didn't just show
them how to change a tire, he explained in great detail the wonders of the internal
combustion engine (spark plugs!).
Arthur was a faithful parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis for more than 40
years. After Joan passed away in 2015, Arthur moved to South Yarmouth to be close to his
daughter before her death in 2018. Faith and family were his guiding lights, and he was
grateful for both until his dying day.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Church, 347 South Street,
Hyannis, on Monday, October 20, 2025, at 11am. Calling hours will be held from 9am to 10am
prior to Mass at Chapman Funerals & Cremations, 58 Long Pond Drive, South Yarmouth.
