Arthur "Art" Martin went home to Jesus at 7:43 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at Waterford Assisted Living, Goshen, after living with cancer for the past four years.
Art was born on Oct. 30, 1934, to Ivan and Magdalena Martin of Ephrata, Pennsylvania. Art earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics at Goshen College in 1957. After graduating from Goshen College, he returned to Pennsylvania, where he earned two master's degrees, one in agriculture and another in education. He returned to Goshen, Indiana, where he met and married his wife, Esther (Beachy) Martin.
Art worked as a school teacher for several years before leaving the teaching profession. He worked for Willie's construction for several years, then for Coachmen RV for many years. At the end of his career he also worked at Meijer store in the garden department.
Throughout most of his working life, Art, Esther and their two sons, Eric and Terry, lived on a small farm outside of Goshen. Art raised beef cattle for many years and also grew produce, which he sold for more than three decades to customers throughout Goshen and Elkhart. Art and Esther were long-time members of Yellow Creek Mennonite Church.
Art and his wife owned a condo in Sarasota, Florida, and loved to spend time there in the winter. They were joined by their sons, daughter-in-law Wanda, and granddaughter Emilia for a week during a few of those winters. In 2019, Art and Esther sold their farm and moved to a small house in Goshen, next to one of their sons. Art and Esther enjoyed playing Rook with each other and in their later years they would frequently get up in the middle of the night to play Rook when neither could sleep.
Art also had a passion for writing and left behind three unpublished books. He passed his work ethic on to both of his sons, and his love of swimming and riding bikes to his youngest son. Art will be remembered as a man who deeply loved his family and God and who struggled to overcome a challenging childhood. All who knew him understood how unique he was and experienced first hand his love of talking to others and regaling them with stories from the past, often interlaced with connections between people and places they never knew existed.
Art is survived by his sons Eric Martin and Terry (Wanda Reinford) Martin; granddaughter Emilia Martin; three brothers Joseph (Linda Toews) Martin, Eugene (Kathy) Martin and Doug Martin; and two sisters-in-law Alverta Martin and Diane (Coldren) Martin. Art was preceded in death by both of his parents; his stepmother Helen; his wife, Esther; five brothers, Robert, James, Dwight, Tommy, and an infant brother Ruben.
Art's earthly remains will be cremated, in accordance with his wishes. There will be one hour of visitation prior to the 3:30 p.m. memorial service on Saturday, Aug. 2, at Yellow Creek Mennonite Church. Pastor Wes Bontreger will officiate the services. A private burial will take place prior to the visitation at Yellow Creek Mennonite Cemetery, 64901 C.R. 11, Goshen.
