He attended grade school in Ellendale. The family moved to Minneapolis, MN where he attended Trinity First Lutheran School and graduated from Central High School in Minneapolis. Each summer while he attended school he came back to North Dakota and worked on farms for relatives and others in the Monango and Ellendale area.
He attended the University of Minnesota and enrolled in fish and wildlife management.
Arvin married Esther Speidel on December 28, 1951 in Monango, ND.
He was drafted into the Army on January 15, 1952. He was stationed in California, Maryland and Germany before being Honorably Discharged December 22, 1953.
He and Esther then lived in Minneapolis while he continued his education at the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1957, with a degree in Vocational Agriculture. He taught Vo-Ag classes in Atwater, MN for the next five years. The family returned to Minneapolis when he took a position as Revenue Officer with the U.S. Treasury Department. He transferred to Aberdeen in 1969, and eventually retired on June 2, 1989, after 27 years of service.
After retirement he enjoyed working part-time on his brother-in-law's farm north of Edgley, ND, and fishing and gardening with Esther. Esther passed away October 6, 2007 and Arvin moved to Bethesda Towne Square in spring of 2011 where he resided for 13 years.
