Ashok Prahlad MD

Ashok "Dr. P" Prahlad, M.D, a beloved surgeon, husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2026, in Alexandria, Virginia, at the age of 74.

Born in Bangalore, India, Dr. Prahlad attended Bishop Cotton School for Boys before earning his medical degree from Bangalore Medical College. He completed his residency in general surgery at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School of Rutgers University, beginning a distinguished career that would span more than three decades. Known as both a gifted and compassionate surgeon, Dr. Prahlad touched countless lives during his years of practice before retiring from Kaiser Permanente in 2014.

His commitment to healing extended far beyond his professional practice. Dr. Prahlad generously volunteered his surgical skills on medical missionary trips to Haiti and the Dominican Republic, embodying his deep belief in service to others.

He lived life with vibrant enthusiasm and unmistakable style. He was an avid traveler with a particular love for beaches, hot weather, and the Caribbean. A voracious reader and tennis player, he approached his out-of-office pursuits with the same passion he brought to his medical practice. He was known for his impeccable fashion sense, his appreciation for spicy cuisine, and his fondness for a good cigar and after-dinner port. He loved all animals, but was especially devoted to his Gordon Setters and his outdoor cats. His warmth, generosity, and zest for life will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 42 years, Patricia; his daughters Kate and Laura; sons-in- law George and Peyton; granddaughters Ruby and Eloise; and his brother Harsha and sister-in-law Veena.

A celebration of life, open to the public, will be held at Cunningham-Turch Funeral Home on March 13 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his name to Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation or Doctors Without Borders.
