Aubie Kay Paulson Shaw, 50, of Blackhoof, formerly of Eveleth, Minnesota, passed away at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, California on June 23rd, 2025. She was awaiting a heart and kidney transplant. Born on February 23, 1975, in Virginia, MN, she was a loving wife, sister, daughter, niece, cousin, and friend; known for her kindness, curiosity, and deep dedication to learning and helping others.
Since 2016, Aubie proudly served as a professor at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD), where she was deeply respected by students and colleagues alike for her passion for education and research. Aubie was committed and dedicated to new projects, getting involved from the inception of the Gateways Curriculum Committee and among many accolades in her field, she earned a "Best Instructor Award" from students. Her interests extended far beyond the classroom - she had a love for thrifting, cooking, gardening, and exploring with friends and family. She was also deeply involved in cancer research, a cause that was close to her heart.
Aubie married the love of her life, Jason Paulson, on April 22, 2023. Together they shared a life filled with adventure, love, and support.
She is survived by her husband, Jason Paulson; father, David Dean; sisters, Mandy Shaw and Zoe Swanson Dean; aunts and uncles, Wanda Shaw (Ron Green), Bob Shaw (Shelley Stellmach), Wendy LaMere, Dale Shaw, and Dawn Frazee (Scott); in-laws; John and Betty Paulson, Stacy Paulson (Colleen), Missy Paulson (Darrell White), Amanda Gustafson (Scott); her many cherished cousins, including Jody Kaivola (Garrett), Tim Frazze, Cassie Derickson (Brett); niece and nephews, Avery Frazee and Abigail Frazee, Shania Nelson (Cohen), Broc Paulson (Brittny), Evan Gustafson and Brooks Gustafson; special friend and maid-of-honor, Tammy Sobolik and numerous other friends. Lastly, her loving dog, Addy.
Aubie was preceded in death by her mother, Linda Shaw; grandparents, Donald and Mitsuko Shaw, Kay Dean, Don Dean and uncles, Larry Shaw and Shawn LaMere.
Aubie brought warmth and light to all who knew her. She will be remembered for her intelligence, generosity, and joyful spirit. A great motto, perhaps a challenge to all; Aubie's closing remarks, may be best summarized by her tagline of her emails: Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly.
Please join the family in Celebrating Aubie's Life on Saturday, July 19, 2025 at 11 AM at Atkins-Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th Street, Cloquet, MN; visitation begins at 9 am and a reception will follow at the funeral home. All are welcome to join in commemorating her remarkable life.
