Conway, SC
Aubrey Best, 58, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, after a
long and courageous battle with his health.
Aubrey was born in Myrtle Beach, SC and was the son of the late Gene and Pat Altman. He
attended Loris Middle School and graduated from Loris High School. He was in the band,
played basketball and baseball, and ran track but was most passionate about football. A back
injury prevented him being able to accept a full scholarship to University of South Carolina.
During high school, he worked at the Myrtle Beach Grand Prix during the summer and the family
restaurant during the winter. While attending Francis Marion University and in later years he
also worked in construction before returning to the family business full time.
Aubrey worked many years with his parents at Altman's Seafood in Loris and found his love for
cooking. He loved watching cooking shows so he could learn new techniques and dishes but
he rarely used a recipe. After leaving the restaurant, he kept his son's friends fed and usually
would have Sunday lunch ready. He could build almost anything and did much work for his
family, including building decks and his shop at home, all the renovations and remodeling at the
family restaurant, his parents carport, and other jobs. He built props for Bible school and helped
with church events and helped maintain church grounds although he did not give his heart to the
Lord until October 11, 2022.
He loved to hunt, garden, work in the yard, and ride four wheelers, dirt bikes and boats prior to
his cancer and other health conditions. Thankfully, he was able to spend time riding on the boat
and enjoying the breeze and music on his last birthday with family. His family was close to his
heart and he loved spending time with them, especially the grandkids.
Surviving are his loving and devoted wife of 31 years, Angela Hearl Best and her parents, Rev.
Nelson and Lynn Hearl; 2 sons Tyler (Taylor) Best, and Austin (Grace) Best; 2 grandchildren,
Oaklyn Best and Callum Best; faithful canine companion, Chloe.
The family wants to thank many members of the medical staff at MUSC, Duke, Trident, and
Conway Medical Center that have treated Aubrey over the years. A very special thanks to Carol
Ann Gardner, our beloved Nurse Practitioner for many, many years; Shannon, Pam, Allison,
Hannah, Brian, Valerie, Leah and Liz with the Center Well nurses and therapists; and Andrea
with Agape Palliative Care; and those that may have been missed.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 PM Saturday evening, December 7, 2024, at
Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, December 8, 2024, at Calvary Pentecostal Baptist Church, Conway, SC.
