Conway, SC
Mildred Jeanne Berkenbile, age 97, passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2025 at her home. Mrs. Berkenbile was born July 1, 1927 in Goodrich, Kansas, the second daughter of Sarah Veda Murrow Wright and Iven M. Wright.
She graduated from Parker Rural High School in Parker, Kansas in 1944. She immediately entered business college on a scholarship she received. The college was in Kansas City, MO. After about 8 months, she took a civil service test and received a secretarial job in civil service working in an Army Supply Depot in Kansas City, KS. This was during the war. It was here that she met Harold Berkenbile who she married on March 19, 1948. A son, Gene, was born in August of 1958.
After a while in civil service work, she was offered a job with the Chrysler Corporation as a Bookkeeping Operator in a parts plant office in Kansas City, KS and she accepted that offer. She worked there for 36 years and moved up the ranks to a computer operator in the office there. She retired from Chrysler in August of 1982. After staying home for a while, she decided to go back to work as a Key Punch Operator for an office of Mutual Benefit Life Insurance in Kansas City, MO. She worked there for 7 ½ years and retired from there when her husband was going to retire from TWA.
During her lifetime, Mildred and Harold liked to fish and Gene liked to water ski and camp. Therefore, they spent a lot of time on weekends on the lakes in Oklahoma and Western Kansas. Many times friends and relatives joined them on weekends.
Mildred and Harold moved to Myrtle Beach, SC in 1998 to be near their son who lived here.
Her husband Harold, preceded her in death on June 29, 2003. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her brother, Iven Wright and her sister, Darlene Wright Collins.
She is survived by her son, Gene Berkenbile and his wife Pam of Conway, SC; four nieces, Cynthia Ann Bertrand of Plano, TX, Barbara Lynn Baden of Garden City, KS, Millie Carlton of Marble Falls, TX, and Melisa Temple of Placentia, CA; and one nephew, Mike Wright of Whittier, CA.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, May 10, 2025 at the Hillcrest Mausoleum Indoor Chapel. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
