Coolidge “Austin” Burnette Jr, 86 of Winterville passed away on March 11, 2025. Born June 12, 1938, he was the son of the late Coolidge A. Burnette Sr and Edna McConnell Burnette.
Austin served in the Army Reserves and he wrote to his late wife frequently while away (she saved all of his letters). He and his late wife were avid campers and loved getting together with friends for cook outs and making homemade ice cream. He loved watching the Dawgs play football on Saturday and Nascar racing on Sundays with his little dog Toby in his lap. He loved God, his family and his friends. Austin retired from the University of Georgia. He and his wife were active members of the Christian Life Worship Center for many years.
Austin was a big joker and always teasing someone. He had a big laugh and an ever bigger smile. His smile, laugh and teasing will be missed.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Joyce Burnette; his brother, Darrell Burnette, his niece Monica Burnette. He is survived by his brother Michael Burnette, cousin; Donna Jean Best, nieces & nephews; Sharon Smith, (husband David Smith), Marsha Hatch (husband Pete Hatch), Jonathon Burnette, great nephews; Jake and Colton Smith.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 16, 2025 at 4pm in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East Athens with Roger Loggins officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 2:00pm.
