Avery James Craig, 30, of Lewistown, passed away at his home on Friday, April 18, 2025. Born on April 27, 1994, in Lewistown, Avery was the beloved son of Dirk J. and Nancy (Barr) Craig. He is deeply mourned by his devoted companion, Mya Rager; his cherished brother, Colton Craig, and Colton's wife, Danielle, of Milroy; and his treasured niece, Mackenzie Craig, whose bond with Avery was something truly special. He is also survived by his loving maternal grandparents, Pete and Mary Barr; and joins his paternal grandparents, James and Dorothy Craig in heaven. Avery's life was also enriched by the many aunts, uncles, and cousins who held a meaningful place in his heart.
Avery was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Lewistown.
A 2012 graduate of Mifflin County High School, Avery went on to earn a bachelor's degree in accounting from Lock Haven University.
Whether casting a line into the Juniata River or chasing salmon on Lake Ontario, Avery felt most alive near the water-especially in the company of his brother and closest friends. Camp Craig held a sacred place in his heart, where memories were etched beside the warmth of a fire and the laughter of lifelong friendship. Though he will be remembered as a "fair-weather" hunter, he never missed a chance to be part of the moment.
Music was the heartbeat of Avery's world. A natural talent, he could make magic with a guitar, piano, or even a trumpet in his younger years. No one could beat him at Shazam, a testament to his encyclopedic knowledge of songs and artists. His competitive streak showed in everything from cornhole to cards to darts-but win or lose, his joy was found in the people around him.
He was happiest at the beach, reveling in the waves despite his distaste for the sand, and took immense pride in his unique hobby of keeping three sprawling aquariums-home to many fascinating fish, especially his favorite, Rex.
Avery served as a lifeguard for several summers at Rec Park Pool and Hyner Run, a role that perfectly combined his love for water with his protective, caring nature. A passionate sports fan, he cheered loudly for the Boston Bruins, one of his fondest memories being a trip with Colton to see them beat the Penguins in Pittsburgh. And when it came to fantasy football, Avery played with heart and humor-always chasing the championship, yet narrowly escaping the "last place" tattoo.
At the center of every gathering, Avery was the heartbeat of his friend circles-a keystone friend, the one who brought everyone together. If you were in his world, you knew it. He loved fiercely and without hesitation. His greatest joys were his people: Mya, Ian, Colton, Mackenzie, and the friends who were more like family.
A celebration of Avery's life will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 120 N. Main Street, Lewistown, with Rev. Allen Hulslander officiating.
