Avery King Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by John M. Ireland & Son Funeral Home and Chapel on Aug. 8, 2023.
Avery Louis King, beloved son, brother, grandson, and uncle of Moore, Oklahoma, passed away from this life far too soon on August 5, 2023, following a lengthy battle with his health. He was 28 years old. Avery was born in Norman, Oklahoma, on July 18, 1995, the son of Sabrina Ann (Lightner) King and Roy L. King. He was raised in Moore, graduating from Moore High School with the Class of 2014.
Growing up, Avery liked to sing and was actively involved in choir during his middle school years. He was highly intelligent, kind, and considerate of others. Full of energy from the time he was a little boy, Avery's mom fondly recalls how he "climbed on everything" as a child. In high school, he was active in drama, playing roles in the school's production of Footloose, as well as The Pink Panther. He was also a member of the Pink Panter production crew, later going on to be a part of the crew to produce Grease.
He became a faithful member of the New Heights Baptist Church and loved attending services there, and more so, enjoyed the bonds he made with the people he met there. He was athletic and sports-minded, another passion that sparked early for Avery. Through Graceway church, he played basketball with the Upward Sports league from 2006-2008. He always wanted to be a sports broadcaster, and with his intellect and knowledge of stats, Avery would have made an amazing correspondent. He loved keeping up with the Baltimore Ravens, watching Thunder basketball, and liked following any team who was up-and-coming or in-the-lead.
At home, he jokingly referred to himself as the "King of microwave popcorn". Avery was passionate about tech and especially loved to play video games, particularly the series of Fallout games. He could – and did – spend many a day and expend plenty of man hours playing Fallout. He also loved music, often drawn to poignant classics and emotional artists like Etta James and Frank Sinatra, and he loved listening to his favorite alternative rock and emo, with Green Day, Fall Out Boy, NF, Manifest, and Panic at the Disco in heavy rotation.
Probably most important to note, Avery was a longtime fan of all things Star Trek. The Borg Collective reference was a common practice amongst Avery and his family and friends. His family lovingly jokes, "He was our 7 of 8!" Family was what mattered most to Avery. He considered the quality time he spent with the people he loved to be precious. He was a loving son, brother, grandson, uncle, nephew, and cat-dad, and a trustworthy friend to so many. Avery will be forever missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Preceding him in death are his maternal grandmother, Sue Lightner-Boone, great-grandmother Christine Akers, his paternal grandfather, Roy D. King, paternal grandmother Greta Tilson and her partner Elmer Fredrick, two aunts, Cindy "Mama" Akers, Kathy May and husband Roy May, and an uncle, Kenneth Akers.
Left to cherish his memory are his mom and dad, Sabrina and Roy King of Moore, OK; two sisters, Christieann Powell of Moore, and Jessica Goode and partner Cage Ellison of Moore, OK, his brother, Nicholas King of Moore, and former brother-in-law Aaron Goode of Midwest City, OK. Avery is also survived by two nieces, River and Hazel Goode, a nephew, Conner Goode; his grandpa, Benney Boone of Warr Acres, OK; his aunt, Kathy Sharp, two uncles, Jeremy King, and Bradley King; his beloved cat, Jack King, and many loving cousins, family members, and a host of loyal friends.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, August 26, 2023, at New Heights Baptist Church, 1414 SW 119th St. Oklahoma City, OK, at 1:00 pm.
