Robert Nelson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McNeil's Funeral Service on Jan. 28, 2026.
Robert Ray Nelson was born in Scottsbluff, Nebraska on April 29, 1947 to Ralph B and Lois Leonard Nelson. The family moved to the OKC area in the early 1950's and Robert graduated from Moore High School in 1965. Robert met the girl who would become his wife in July 1964. He was 17 and Cindy Adkins was 16. They married in April 1966 and started their life together. Robert was hired by Tinker AFB in October 1966 as a trainee Jet Engine Mechanic where he started his long career of 37 years of Federal Service. He retired from FAA in OKC in 2006, ending his career as a Supply Systems Analyst.

Robert started in his first weekly bowling league in Sept 1966 and continued bowling, sometimes several nights a week, until he was unable to do so due to poor health a year ago. The family enjoyed many wonderful vacations across the U.S. as Robert participated in the National Bowling Tournaments for over 35 years. He enjoyed traveling, golfing and spending time with family. Robert was also an avid OU fan and attended many sports events over the years, including season tickets for OU football for over 30 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Cindy; his 2 sons, John Nelson and Michael Nelson and wife Candace; 4 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren with the 7th due end of April. He is also survived by his siblings, Jerri Wilson and Mike, Lynne Norwood and Jim, Rick Nelson and Patty, and many nieces and nephews.

Robert was a caring, loving man and made many good friends over the years.

Robert chose to be cremated and his memorial service will be Saturday, February 7th, at 10am at McNeil's Funeral Service on Hwy 152 in Mustang, Oklahoma.
