Floraetta Spain Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McNeil's Funeral Service on Jan. 21, 2026.
Floraetta was born on January 6, 1942, and on January 20, 2026, she finished a life well lived-on her own terms, with grit, grace, and just a little bit of mischief.

Floraetta began her 33-year career in St. Louis, Missouri, with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. When she was diagnosed with cancer the first time, she made the decision to move closer to family in Mustang, Oklahoma. She truly loved her job. She showed up day after day with dedication, pride, and probably a few strong opinions about how things should be done-most of which were correct. Work wasn't just something she did; it was something she did well.

When she retired, Floraetta didn't slow down-she simply shifted gears. She embraced life fully, traveling the world and collecting stories, memories, and probably a few souvenirs along the way. One of her favorite adventures was traveling to South Africa, a testament to her curiosity and courage. Cancer tried to stop her-twice-and failed twice. Floraetta met those battles with ferocity, determination, and an unshakable will to keep living boldly.

Her faith was a steady anchor throughout her life. As a long-time member of The Bridge Church in Mustang, Oklahoma, Floraetta found community, purpose, and connection. Her faith wasn't loud-it was lived, shown through kindness, perseverance, and a deep love for others.

Though she never had human children, Floraetta was very much a mother. Her first beloved puppy, Gigi, was her pride and joy. After Gigi came Crackers, Sunny, and Rio-the most annoying dog anyone has ever met. Rio had endless energy, zero volume control, and the unique ability to test the patience of everyone except Floraetta. He bit everyone who wasn't her. He was truly a dog only a mother could love-and love him she did, fiercely and unapologetically.

Family mattered deeply to Floraetta. Her cousin David was her honorary son in every way that mattered. He showed up-again and again-mowing her yard for years, taking her to countless doctor's appointments, and caring for her with quiet devotion. In her final moments, David was there, holding her hand, serving her with loyalty and love until the very end. Their bond was built not just on blood, but on commitment, trust, and deep affection.

Floraetta was preceded in death by her father, John Arlyn Spain; her mother, Cleo Icy (Grizzle) Spain; her nieces, Donna Spain and Danna Spain; and her cousin and nearly 30-year roommate, Delbert Stevens (Butch).

She is survived by her beloved cousin David McEvoy and his wife Dianna, of Oklahoma City; her brother Richard Spain and wife Connie, of Topeka, Kansas; her niece Brenda Gilmore, along with great-nieces and great-nephews, all of Topeka, Kansas; her cousins Sue Gurley and her husband Ray, of Mustang, Oklahoma; Christopher McEvoy and his wife Rhiannon, of Oklahoma City; Hope Hill and her husband Drew, of Bethany, Oklahoma; and her cherished church family at The Bridge Church in Mustang, Oklahoma.

Floraetta was strong, independent, funny, stubborn in the best way, and full of heart. She lived bravely, loved deeply, and left an imprint on everyone lucky enough to know her.

She was loved.

She will be missed.

And she will be remembered-with smiles, laughter, and stories told again and again-just the way she would have wanted.

Over the past 18 years I have had the pleasure to work with Floraetta and help her with her investments. Our conversations would last for at least 30 minutes and we only talked business for 5 minutes, I would ask about her life and family and she would ask about mine. She would always ask about the boys playing baseball. I only wish we would have stopped by as we were driving back to Kansas from playing ball in Texas so she could have met them. It was always a joy to deal with her. I know she will be missed by so many. The fond memories will keep her in our hearts. I have all of her family in my thoughts and prayers.
