TRAVIS NELSON Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Thomson Funeral System on Jan. 29, 2026.
MR. TRAVIS ORVILLE NELSON, age 49, of 104 Canary Street-Apt. 104, Thomson, GA passed on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at his residence. Family members and friends may call at the funeral home. THOMSON FUNERAL SYSTEM, Thomson, GA oversees all arrangements.

MR. TRAVIS ORVILLE NELSON began his rest on Tuesday, January 27, 2026. Born in Augusta, GA, and raised in Wrens, GA, Travis' journey of service and honor began once he graduated from Jefferson County High School in Louisville, GA with the Class of 1996. As a gifted athlete and a student of history, his passions led him to a distinguished career as a Sergeant in the United States Army.

During his seven years of service as a Combat Engineer, Travis completed deployments to Korea and twice to Iraq. His bravery and commitment were recognized through numerous honors, including two Army Commendation Medals, five Army Achievement Medals, and two Good Conduct Medals. Throughout his time abroad, he remained anchored by the monthly care packages and letters from his beloved mother, Shirley; their bond was a source of great mutual pride.

Travis was a friendly spirit with simple joys; he never met a stranger. Following his military service, he resided in Colorado with his late wife, Nakisha, where they enjoyed the simple beauty of cooking together. Travis was a man of many interests-from fishing and legal dramas to deep conversations with family. In his final year, Travis found peace in studying the Bible, holding onto the hope of a future in Paradise and a reunion with his mother.

Travis was preceded in death by his parents, Shirley Ann Nelson and Johnny Lewis Oliphant, Jr.; his wife, Nakisha Michelle Nelson; his grandmother, Mary E. Nelson; and uncles, Michael Nelson and John Beasley.

Our dearly beloved Travis Orville Nelson will be deeply missed by his family members and friends. He believed that his faith would allow him to conquer the enemy death. He leaves behind a lifetime of precious memories; his legacy of love will always be cherished by those he loved and who loved him: five devoted sisters, Melody Nelson of Augusta, GA, Ivonne (Jaime) Jones of Grovetown, GA, Tamika Nelson of Louisville, KY, Talisha (Travis) Shields of Louisville, GA and Clarissa (Tarrod) Jackson of Augusta, GA; five nephews , Rakeem Nelson, Jamaree Nelson, Joseph Vaughner Jr., JoDarrius Vaughner and Maddox Jackson; one great-niece, Alaina Nelson; one great-nephew, JaMere Murray; two aunts, Patricia Beasley of Wrens, GA and Janice Kay Jackson of Augusta, GA; three uncles, Bobby Nelson, Willie Jones Jr., both of Miami, FL and John Jackson, Sr. of Wrens, GA; a host of cousins and other relatives and friends.
