Avis Joanne was born to Robert George Day and Gladys Ima Goodridge Day on January 17, 1930. She joined her brother George Torrey Day in their home located on a farm northwest of Thayer, Iowa. She attended school at Thayer, Iowa, graduating in 1948. She was recruited to join the basketball team as an 8th grader and talked fondly about their appearance at the state basketball tournament.

After high school, Avis taught in Talmage, Thayer, Lorimor and finally Creston until 1995 when she retired after teaching for 47 years. She treasured and loved her students, parents, and fellow coworkers. Avis received a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Drake University and continued taking coursework throughout her career.

Avis met her future husband, Lyndell Dean Hainline, on a blind date. They were married on September 21, 1950, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They had a special love and devotion to one another. One of their favorite activities was traveling together. Avis was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star, The Bancroft Historical Society, Alpha Kappa Delta Sorority, a life member of the National Education Association, bridge clubs, Creston area Retired School Personnel Association, and a member of First United Methodist Church in Creston where she faithfully served.

Her retirement years were spent volunteering, traveling, gardening, working with flowers and playing bridge. She loved dogs and enjoyed shopping for antiques with her friend Marcia Riley. Avis was an avid basketball fan and enjoyed watching the Indiana Fever. One of Avis's greatest joys was spending time with her family and friends making many wonderful memories and traditions. She will be deeply missed.

Avis is survived by her sisters-in-law, Cheri Hainline, Kathy Hainline and Carolyn Hainline, many nieces, nephews, and friends who loved her very much. Avis was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother and her cherished Schnauzers, Sammy, and Fritz.

We are grateful and blessed to have had Avis in our lives. She was a valued member of the Creston community. Her warmth, kindness and strength touched many lives. Though she has moved on to begin the next chapter in her journey, she will live on in our hearts and be deeply missed. The family would like to thank the staff at EveryStep Hospice and Homestead, Osceola for their excellent care and love for Avis.
