She was born on July 5, 1953 to Perry and Marcella (Heslar) Wimmer in Clinton, Indiana, and was the youngest of four daughters. Barbara was a gifted student. After graduating from Rockville High School in 1971, she attended Butler University where she received her B.A. in Fine Art, and later her M.A. in English.
