Barbara “Barb” Elizabeth (Blomme) DeVos was born on September 4, 1940, in Marshall, to Maurice Sr. and Louise (Claeys) Blomme. Barb grew up on a farm near Green Valley and graduated from Cottonwood High School. After graduating, Barb attended St. Mary’s Nursing School in Minneapolis, and she worked as an LPN for 15 years at Weiner Memorial Hospital in Marshall. On May 21, 1960, Barb was united in marriage to Leonard DeVos at St. Clotilde Catholic Church in Green Valley. The couple farmed and raised their family north of Marshall. They were married almost 60 years at the time of his death in 2020.
Barb’s family was the most important thing to her. She enjoyed her work as a farmer’s wife, keeping a big garden and canning all of the vegetables. She was a wonderful cook and baker, and she did all of the family sewing. In her free time, Barb enjoyed watching the news and weather, and the Minnesota Twins, Timberwolves, and Lynx. She also enjoyed going to the Adult Community Center to play games, especially BINGO. Her faith was very important to her, and Barb could often be found at church in her regular pew.
Barb died on Monday, January 29, 2024, at her residence in Marshall, surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her children Greg (Sheryl) DeVos of Marshall, Brian (Dorothy) DeVos of Waseca, Cathy (Mike) Louwagie of Marshall, Susie DeVos of Bloomington; grandchildren Derek (Angie) DeVos, Devin (Elizabeth) DeVos, Deanna (Alex) Lessman, Denaca (Grant) Moorse, April (Matt) Thompson, Brittney (Matt) Lien, Casie DeVos, Brandon (Melissa) Louwagie, Meagan (Jacob) Hoflock, and Charlie Louwagie; great-grandchildren Louis, Olivia, Mary, Isabelle, Nola, Elaira, Eden, Lucy, Logan, Melah, Delaney, Hadley, Brantley, Walton, Lenora, Adelia, Owen, Emmett, Avery, Ryker, Wyatt, and one on the way; her siblings Carol (Eugene) DeSmet, Joan (Jim) Kluis, Pat Miller, and Maurice Jr. (Martha) Blomme. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Leonard, daughter Nancy Coffey, great-grandson Lincoln, and brother-in-law Duane Miller.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Prairie Home Hospice or Holy Redeemer School.
