Barbara Sue Bortnem, 76, of Volga, South Dakota, passed away on October 1, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Funeral Services have been set for 10:30am Monday, October 6, 2025 at Lake Campbell Lutheran Church, Volga, SD. Visitation will be held from 2:00pm to 4:00pm Sunday, October 5, 2025 at Rude's Funeral Home, Brookings, SD.

Barbara was born on February 22, 1949, in Brookings, South Dakota, to Glenn and Hazel (McCord) Bortnem. She grew up on the family farm, where she developed a lifelong love of animals. Horses, cats, and dogs were always a part of her life, and she cared for each with special devotion.

Barb shared a close and loving bond with her daughter, Malena. The two lived together in Volga and were not only mother and daughter but also best friends, creating countless cherished memories side by side.

She had a joyful spirit and found delight in the simple pleasures of life. From days spent at Lake Campbell, roller skating, and hanging out at the original Danceland Ballroom, to sunny afternoons at Southside Beach. Barb made the most of every moment with her family and friends. She also had a passion for motorcycles and logged many miles on her own bike, enjoying the freedom of the open road.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Hazel Bortnem, and her siblings, Wayne, Steve, and Sandy.

She is survived by her beloved daughter, Malena and her dear friend Caija; her lifelong friend, Diana Fischbach, and many cousins who will miss her dearly.

Barbara's kindness, strength, and love of life will be remembered always by those who knew her.
