Barbara Rae Byous, age 88, of
Pensacola, Florida, passed away on March 4, 2024. She was born in
Barron, Wisconsin, the second of 5 children, to John Zulliger and Francis Torgeson Zulliger.
After moving to
Walkerton, Indiana as a child, she later married James Eugene Byous. They had 25 years together before he passed away. During those years, they had 4 children, moved to
Naples, Florida, and then came to live in Pensacola in 1979.
Barbara was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great gram, who put her family first. When she worked outside of her home, she held several different jobs over the years as a secretary, a bank teller/branch manager, in the cafeteria for the Collier County school system, Vanity Fair Mills in Milton and lastly at the information desk in Sacred Heart Women's and Children's hospital. She also attended Pensacola Junior College. She did not fully retire until she was in her early 80's.
Outside of work, Barbara was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church and enjoyed planting flowers in her yard. She didn't hesitate to try different activities including painting ceramics and even clogging. She loved watching Lawrence Welk and ice skating shows on tv. She liked to travel and go to the beach when she could. Mostly she enjoyed being with her family, helping her 3 grandchildren and taking care of her only great grandchild, Felix.
Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, John Zulliger and Francis Vick, her husband, James (Jack) E. Byous, their firstborn infant daughter, Penny Sue, her sisters, Shirley Anderson and Gloria Pascasio, and her brother, John (Sonny) Zulliger.
She is survived by her brother, James (Jimmy) Zulliger, daughter, Connie (husband, Steven Paul) Caton, son Terry (wife, Leianne) Byous and son, Randy Byous. Grandchildren, James Paul Byous, Savannah Rae Caton and Victoria Ann Caton, and the one who kept her going for the past few years, her great grandson, Felix Calvin Gray Byous. Also, sister in law, Virginia (Jean) Nerger, brother in law, Arthur (Bill) Bailey and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Barbara will be so very greatly missed by her family and remembered for the wonderful, loving and strong woman that she was to us all.
Services for Barbara will be held at Faith Chapel Funeral Home South on Friday, March 22, 2024. The family will receive friends for visitation from 10:30 AM until the service at 11:30 AM. The Reverend Dr. Henry E. Roberts will be officiating. Burial will follow in Barrancas National Cemetery, NAS Pensacola, after the service.
