Barbara Cook Obituary

Barbara Ellen (Howard) Cook, age 75, of McDonough, Georgia, was called from her earthly home to take a seat at the table of the King on Thursday, August 28, 2025. She was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on March 5, 1950, the daughter of the late William Tribble "Bill" Howard Sr. and Barbara Beatrice Murray. Raised in Lithonia, Georgia as one of seven children, Barbara grew up with few resources but an abundance of determination and love.

Barbara's greatest pride was her family. She raised her daughter with a tenderness and strength that shaped Tina into one of the most genuine people you could ever meet, a true testament to Barbara's heart as a mother. As her family grew, Barbara's love seemed to deepen with each new generation, making her favorite role of all time that of a great-grandmother.

Known for her meticulous nature, Barbara wanted things to be neat, tidy, and in their place. She valued punctuality, often arriving early to ensure she was always on time. Music brought her joy, especially the sounds of the Beatles, Rod Stewart, and Neil Diamond. She also had a passion for genealogy, often sharing long hours of discovery with her niece, Kay. Barbara treasured documenting life through photography and was often found behind the camera capturing memories for everyone else, leaving far fewer pictures of herself.

Her simple pleasures brought her the most peace like enjoying a meal from Chick-fil-A, sitting outside on her swing watching the birds, hummingbirds, and butterflies, and taking in the beauty of God's creation. A woman of strong Christian faith, Barbara was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Jonesboro, where she nourished her relationship with the Lord and raised her daughter in church.

Barbara also enjoyed a distinguished career of more than 30 years with the National Ornamental and Miscellaneous Metals Association (NOMMA), where she served as Executive Director prior to her retirement. Her work took her across the country, representing the organization with professionalism that made her respected by colleagues and friends throughout the metalworking industry.

She leaves behind her daughter, Tina (Robbie) Gunderson; grandchildren, Drew (Courtney) McMillian, Lacey Gunderson (Jacob) Allison, Brody Gunderson; great-grandchildren, Lynnlee, Brooks, and Lynx; siblings, Linda Howard Goddard, William Tribble Howard Jr., and Peggy Howard; as well as several nieces, nephews, and extended family members. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her siblings, Gene Allen "Buck" Howard, Robin Dale (Howard) Perry, and David C. Howard.

A service to honor Barbara's life will take place on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, beginning at 12:00 PM in the Chapel of Cannon Cleveland Funeral Directors. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until time for the service at the funeral home. The family invites everyone to dress casually and comfortably, just as Barbara would have wanted.
