Barbara Marie Cooper

Barbara Marie (Borgen) Cooper, 62, of Grinnell, passed away at home surrounded by her family and under the care of UnityPoint Hospice on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

Barbara was born on November 17, 1963, in Soldotna, Alaska, to Lester and Esther (Mercurio) Borgen. She was raised in Kenai, Alaska, and graduated from Kenai Central High School.

Barbara married Richard Dale Cooper, and together they raised three children: Richard Keith, William Lester, and Nicole Lynn. Barbara was a devoted homemaker and worked various jobs to help support her family.

Barbara truly loved people. She never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand. She especially cherished time with her grandchildren and enjoyed following their many activities. In her free time, she enjoyed video games, watching television, especially Stargate, diamond painting, and shopping, always on the lookout for a good sale.

Barbara is survived by her sons, Richard (Keshia Lakose) Cooper and William (Kari) Cooper; her daughter, Nicole Carminati; her grandchildren, Haley, Gavin, Jasmine, Johnny, Alex, Shaylynn, Ayden, Devin, and Skylar; and her siblings, Richard Borgen, Billy Borgen, Bobby Borgen, Butch Borgen, and Vern Shook.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Esther (Mercurio) Borgen; her husband, Richard Dale Cooper; and her siblings, Grace (Borgen) Shook and David Borgen.

The family plans to hold a celebration of life at a later date. Smith Funeral Home is assisting the family with cremation services.
