Barbara J. (Seals) DeAngelo Sherman of Des Moines, died on August 22, 2025, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital at the age of 93.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 15 Indianola Rd., Des Moines, IA 50315 on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., with burial to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, 7601 Fleur Dr., Des Moines, IA 50321. A reception will take place at St. Anthony's following the burial, all are welcome to attend.
Born to William and Marjory Seals in Centerville, Iowa on March 18, 1932, Barbara graduated from Centerville High School after which she moved to Des Moines, to work at Meredith Publishing Company. She later worked for Look Magazine, Orchard Place, Oral Surgeons, P.C., and then became a legal secretary for the City of Des Moines, from which she retired, thereafter working part-time for some time at Nyemaster Law Firm, Kelley Law Firm, Connolly Law Firm, and lastly Whitefield Eddy Law Firm.
Barbara was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church for many years where she a lector, Eucharistic minister, and active in the Altar and Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Belizzi-MacRae American Legion Post 659 Auxiliary.
Barbara and her husband Jim were married 54 years, and he preceded her in death in 2004. They enjoyed square dancing and were active in Fairs and Square Dance Club, were Editors of the Iowa Square and Round Dance Magazine for many years, members of Fireside Square National Square Dance Campers Club, serving as board members and editors at the national level of that organization.
Barbara married Harry B. Sherman, Jr., in 2007. They also enjoyed square and round dancing, traveling to other areas to dance four to five nights weekly, and they traveled quite a lot. Barbara also enjoyed flower gardening, was an excellent seamstress, teaching her granddaughters to sew, and also enjoyed reading, knitting, crocheting and scrapbooking.
Barbara is survived by her two sons: Vincent DeAngelo and Matthew DeAngelo of Des Moines; one daughter: Stephanie Agee of Des Moines; granddaughters: Melinda DeAngelo of Des Moines, Aimee Evon of North Carolina, Nicole (Doug) Foust, Shantel Agee of Des Moines, Shaelyn Agee of Boston, MA, Sarah DeAngelo of Chicago, IL, Andrea (Jonah) Exline of Knoxville, TN, and Lisa (Remington) Taylor of Orlando, FL; two great-granddaughters and four great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by James DeAngelo, Harry B. Sherman Jr. and Christopher DeAngelo.
Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to St. Anthony's Catholic Church, the Italian American Cultural Center, or the Belizzi-MacRae American Legion Auxiliary.
