Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jones Funeral Home - Richlands on Oct. 8, 2023.
Barbara G. Dumphy, 85, passed peacefully at her home on October 7, 2023. She was the daughter of the late Julia Grace and Ralph Garland Huffman of Richlands, the sister of the late David Huffman of Jacksonville and sister of Garland Lynn Huffman of Jacksonville. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Leo Dumphy, of Jacksonville and her sons Ralph Nelson Dumphy of Havelock and Keith Alan Dumphy of
Belleview, Florida. Barbara lost her first child, a daughter named Gwendolyn Beth Dumphy, at birth.
Barbara was raised in Richlands in the country lifestyle. She met her husband Leo while attending Richlands High School and they married before they turned 18 in
Dillon, SC, after Leo joined the Navy and they subsequently moved up and down the Eastern Seaboard as they were transferred to different duty stations and even one tour for almost 3 years in Sasebo, Japan. During this time, Barbara was mainly a homemaker to her husband and two sons but also worked part-time a few times at department stores, dental office and the Base PX store during the holidays while stationed in Japan.
Barbara enjoyed bingo, bowling, silk flower arrangements, writing poems, cooking/baking, word jumbles, ACC Basketball (Go Duke) and for several years the Atlanta Braves. Although she didn't finish High School due to getting married and moving with her husband to next duty station, she was very talented in writing poems as she did for many friends and family members that lost a spouse or loved one. Barbara had a warm and caring heart and would do anything for anyone she knew was in need. She was a member of the Ruritan Club of Richlands for several years where she helped raise money for several local charities in the area as well as participated in fundraisers and events at her church along with being member of several committees over the years there. She was a devout Christian and a member at First Christian Church of Richlands for many years after moving back to Camp Lejeune/Jacksonville area in 1976 where many childhood friends and relatives still remained as members. Being from a country upbringing, Barbara seemed to never meet a stranger as she loved to talk to any and everyone while she was out in public. Another one of her passions was chatting on the phone keeping in touch with extended family members and many friends she made over the years.
Barbara was a true fighter when it came to medical issues over the past 30 years from heart problems requiring a pacemaker/defibrillator 30 years ago, to many skin cancers and subsequent surgeries, to diabetes and the daily insulin shots and sugar level testing, to her final journey battling right side heart failure and kidney failure. She recently endured 2 days at Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune, a helicopter flight to ECU Health Heart Institute ICU, discharge by medical transport to Laurels of Pender Skilled Nursing & Rehab Facility, to finally reaching her goal to be back home after 42 days under the care of Lower Cape Fear Hospice. Unfortunately, that time back home was short lived at only a week when the Lord called her to come join her daughter, parents and brother as well as other extended family members previously called to the Promised Land.
Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, October 11 at 7:00pm at the First Christian Church of Richlands. Visitation with the family will precede the service at 6:00pm in the Fellowship Hall behind the church.
Flowers are appreciated. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made in Barbara Dumphy's honor to First Christian Church of Richlands, NC.
