Appalachian Funeral Services & Crematorium - SylvaBarbara (Jean) Curl Fulmer, age 86, went to be with the Lord Friday, November 7, 2025, peacefully in her home, in Cullowhee, NC. Barbara was born on July 17, 1939, at home, in Littleton, NC. She is the daughter of the late John William Curl and the late (Mable) Virginia Bobbitt Curl, of Littleton, NC. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Sidney Fulmer, a sister, (Sadie) Elaine Curl Griffith and a son, John Walter Fulmer.
As devoted servant of Christ, Barbara was a loving wife of 52 years, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed volunteering and sharing her time at Cullowhee United Methodist Church, Cullowhee Kids Preschool, the local Senior Center, local nursing homes and was known for her unwavering faith and kindness.
As a 1957 graduate of Littleton High School, Barbara stayed active and connected with her beloved classmates throughout her life and wouldn’t miss their class reunions.
She graduated in 1961 from the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, during which time she met her husband, Joe. She began her teaching career at High Point Junior High and then went on to teach at Sylva-Webster High School. She stayed home while her children were young and returned to teaching at Smoky Mountain High School until retirement. Her career was spent teaching high school math and mentoring countless students, both academically and spiritually.
Barbara’s personal time was spent as a devoted wife, mother, grandmom and friend. She most recently enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren by continuing to mentor and teach her future generations. She had a love of visiting with her friends, playing the piano, sewing, gardening, cooking, and cultivating a loving home and welcoming all who knew her.
She is survived by her son, Joseph K. Fulmer; daughter, Nancy J. Fulmer; grandchildren, Sydney and husband Taylor Medford, Ramsey Fulmer, Mitchell and wife Haley Wike, Macy Wike and Kajol Patel; great-grandchildren, Olivia and Jack Medford.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at Cullowhee United Methodist Church, 416 Central Drive, Cullowhee, NC, on December 7, 2025, at 3:00 pm. We invite all who knew and loved her to join us honoring her memory. She will be laid to rest in her hometown of Littleton, NC in the spring of 2026. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cullowhee Kids Preschool at P.O. Box 1267, Cullowhee, NC 28723.
