Barbara Brod Germino, age 83, passed away peacefully at her home on the early morning of her birthday, February 8, 2025 surrounded by her immediate family. Barbara was a mother, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother, nurse, teacher, researcher and former Professor at the School of Nursing, UNC-Chapel Hill where she was a faculty member from 1982-2010. She was a proud mom, aunt, and grandmother, to her family, as well as a loyal and caring friend and teacher.
Dr. Germino earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in nursing from Duke University School of Nursing, and a PhD in Nursing Science from the University of Washington in Seattle. Her long career in nursing included experience as a hospital nurse, home health nurse, teacher for village health aides in Alaska and faculty positions at Duke, University of South Florida, and UNC-Chapel Hill. At UNC-Chapel Hill she was the first to hold the Beerstecher Blackwell Endowed Chair and was elected as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. Her career focused on working with people and families who had chronic or life-threatening illness, particularly those with cancer and those at the end of life. She published many articles and book chapters, and presented papers at national and international professional conferences.
Barbara was a long-time volunteer with the American Cancer Society in North Carolina, Florida, Washington, and Alaska and served on the Board of Directors for the South Atlantic Division of the American Cancer Society.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 52 years, Victor H. Germino. She is survived by her daughter, Laurie Germino, son Michael Germino (Michele), son Gregory Germino (Wanda), grandchildren, Greta Germino, Talia Williamson, Abigail Germino (Trenton), Nakoa Germino, great grandson Gabriel Germino, brother, Steven Brod (Pamela), niece, Emily Brod (Francisco), and nephew, Ryan Brod.
The family will receive visitors at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home, 1113 West Main St. Durham, NC 27701 on Monday, February 17th from 6-7pm, immediately following there will be a service in celebration of Barbara’s life from 7-8pm.
Memorial gifts may be sent to the American Cancer Society, Healing Transitions Women’s program (Raleigh, NC), Duke University School of Nursing, UNC-Chapel Hill School of Nursing graduate scholarship fund, or the University of Washington School of Nursing PhD program.
