Barbara Gerwe Obituary

Barbara Gerwe passed away peacefully at home on July 10, 2023. Barbara was born in Grosse Pointe, Michigan on February 17, 1930. She attended Wellesley College, graduated from the University of Michigan, and had two Masters degrees from Santa Clara University. After a January visit to the Rose Bowl in 1951, Barbara thought, "Why would you live anywhere else but California?" After graduation, she and her three best friends pooled together funds to buy a used car and headed west to become California school teachers. At a tea dance in San Diego she met a handsome Navy lieutenant named Eugene, which led to 68 years of marriage, seven children, three cross country moves, and many retirement years full of world travel with family and friends.Barbara was always game for an adventure and was a continuous force for good. She loved backpacking and hiking, playing tennis, and watching and scoring baseball. Her favorite t-shirt read "the best things in life aren't things." She walked the talk with her Catholic faith as an elementary school teacher, and with her many volunteer activities which included working as a child advocate, teaching English as a second language, delivering food to the underserved, and more. Barbara is survived by her husband Gene, her sister Kennie Peterson, her children Gretchen (C David), David (Jeannette), Peter (Oksana), Sara (Bill), Kate (Mindy), and Merg (Lauren). She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Barbara is predeceased by her daughter, Mary Alice Gerwe Jubb, and her grandson, Jonathan Gerwe. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Catholic Charities of Santa Clara county (https://www.ccscc.org/donate), or to your favorite left-leaning or socially conscious organization.

My condolences to the family and this is very sad news for me. I am a former foster child who met Barbara at age 15. She was a beautiful soul in this world. She was always there for me when I had no one else to turn to. I learned so much from her and I can say I am much of the woman I am today because of her. I had always kept in touch with her and lost contact when I moved away from California two years ago. The world needs more people like Barbara in it. Thank you for all the life lessons learned barb, I will always remember you and tell my children of our time together making green chicken enchilada casserole at your home and all the times we spent trying different Mexican restaurants. I love u.... RIP.

I am so saddened to hear of Barbara's passing. She was an advocate of mine when I was a foster child and it was a lifelong friendship. I'd known her since I was 11 years old, making our friendship the longest I'd had in my life. I tried to stay close to her when I got older and moved from California and would call every so often to say hi and catch up. She was such an important part of my childhood and I always valued our time together. RIP Barbara, you were a wonderful part of this world.

Barbara was a close friend, role model, frequent tennis partner and inspiration to our family in the 9 years when we lived in San Jose and worked at Santa Clara University. She lived a wonderful life and her spirit--along with that of husband Gene and the entire Gerwe clan--enriched our lives and will never be forgotten.

Whenever I attended one of the many Gerwe family get togethers at Kate and Mindy's house, Barbara was always a constant, loving presence and a friend to all. I feel so honored to have known her and to witness the example she set for everyone around her. Sending all the Gerwes my love and deepest sympathy.
