Obituary published on Legacy.com by Brown & Sons Funeral Homes & Crematory (26th St. Chapel) - Bradenton on Jan. 5, 2026.
Jackson Henry Gerwe lived a life of generosity, thoughtfulness, and unwavering faith. His life was marked by an enduring spirit and a kind heart. He was born in Washington D.C. on September 13, 1933. While not meeting until later life, Jack's journey included his life partner, Rosemary Darnall, born on the same day, in the same hospital, one year later.
On December 15, 2025, Jack passed away peacefully of natural causes. His daughter Pam, his life partner of 30 years, Rosemary Darnall and his dog Sean Patrick were at his side. Special thanks to Affinity Hospice's love and care. Also, thanks to Discovery Village and Liana Memory Care for their loving care. His departure leaves behind many cherished memories and friendships.
A devout Catholic, Jack's faith was the cornerstone of his life. It shone through in his daily actions and the way he engaged with the world around him.
Jack's commitment to service was exemplified by his honorable tenure in the US Army, January 1954-January 1956. He served his country with distinction and his time in the Army cultivated a love of country and patriotism that would last a lifetime.
Jack's love of yard sales and resale shops was not merely a hobby, but as he often joked, also a "sickness." Jack found joy in restoring watches, clocks and Christmas lights for the church resale shop. Jack's care for the forgotten and the overlooked was a metaphor for his approach to life, where he sought to love and care for those he encountered.
Hosted under the shade of a big oak in their front yard, weekly happy hours are a time of laughter and camaraderie, where stories are shared, and friendships are deepened. These gatherings are a testament to Jack and Rosemary's ability to bring people together. The family is forever grateful for these neighbors. Their support during the last several years is a testimony to the importance of love and community. Jack would appreciate that his spirit and memory will continue to attend weekly happy hour.
Jack is survived by his loving partner, Rosemary Darnall, and his devoted daughter, Pam Gerwe and son-in-law, Mike Jopek. Later in life, Jack's love of Rosemary expanded his family.
He was always welcomed and loved by Rosemary's daughter, Katie (and Larry) Fidel, and their children, Rick, Kirsten and Kyle and grandchildren. Jack's family also included his nieces and nephews who visited many times whenever they came to Florida.
Jack's calm, steady love was a gift that will continue to live on through all that knew him. Memories of his guidance, humor and love will offer solace as we grieve this loss. In a world that moves too fast, Jack taught us to slow down, to appreciate family and friends. His example encouraged us to be more generous, thoughtful, and to live a faith-filled life.
Let us hold dear the time we have, share joy with others, and continue to build a world that Jack would be proud of-a world filled with love, compassion, and the promise of renewal.
Please join us to celebrate and remember Jack's life.
